Borough: Don't Fear Discolored Tap Water

Fair Lawn is beginning a hydrant-flushing program on Monday, April 1, that may result in discoloration of tap water.

If you notice discolored water coming from your faucet in the coming weeks, don't panic.

That's the advice of the Fair Lawn Water Department, which will be undertaking a six-week hydrant-flushing program starting on Monday.

The program is part of routine maintenance required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and will be carried out from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. to minimize inconvenience to residents, according to a borough release. The hydrant-flushing will not cause any interruption of service, but it may cause some residents to experience discoloration of their water.

"This is expected and a normal occurrence when existing water mains are disturbed," a Water Department release states. "If you experience this, caution should be used in washing white clothes; however, the discoloration poses no health hazard and the water is safe for consumption. Just allow the water to run from your tap until it clears."

Residents with questions about the program can call 201-794-5305 during normal business hours or 201-794-5374 at all other times.
