Car Bursts Into Flames on Route 4 Overpass

A car crossing the Route 4 overpass in the area of Route 208 Friday afternoon burst into flames due to a mechanical malfunction, authorities said.

A mechanical malfunction caused a car to burst into flames Friday afternoon while traveling along the Route 4 overpass in the area of Route 208 in Fair Lawn, authorities said.

The car's driver and lone occupant was not injured in the fire, which closed the overpass for more than an hour and diverted eastbound Route 4 traffic to the local service road that passes by Jack Daniels Volkswagen, said.

Fair Lawn Fire Chief Eric Reamy said the driver pulled over and vacated the vehicle on the overpass after its engine started smoking and he heard a pop. Just seconds later the car burst into flames.

"The car was completely engulfed by the time we arrived," Reamy said. "Bumper to bumper."

Reamy said fire crews extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes, but that the car, a 1996 Buick Regal, was completely destroyed. It was towed from the scene, police said.
