What Did You Think of the Fair Lawn Fireworks Display? [Video]
A video of the Fourth of July Fireworks Display Finale at Memorial Park.
Hundreds of residents -- reclining on lawn chairs, sprawled on the ground or just standing to behold the spectacle -- lined Berdan Avenue and crowded into Memorial Park Monday night for the annual Fair Lawn Fireworks Display.
The show started a few minutes after 9 p.m. and lasted until approximately 9:30 p.m.
In case you missed it, here's a video of the finale.
If you saw it live (or even if you didn't) tell us what you thought of the fireworks display this year.

What a waste of tax payer money. Tens of thousands fund without choice a fireworks display that a tiny percentage have paid additional taxes to see. I wonder if that < 1% enjoyed the show. I know the 99% didn't.
@Zak, how much was collected in ticket sales?

After comments like this, perhaps you need to stop waving your flag. Maybe you should also go to a country that doesn't place value on its history or here's a better one- go to a country that does not celebrate independence.

@Andria - I don't have the official tally yet, but from speaking to some of the ticket committee members afterward the perception was that turnout was high this year

Each year the Fair Lawn fireworks display gets better with more advanced and more beautiful fireworks. You could feel the awe of the thousands of people when certain new fireworks were displayed. This year featured the largest fireworks I have ever seen. I would say 50% larger than the largest ever, they literally filled the entire sky above us, to the wonder and amazement of both children and adults. The people I spoke to afterwards all said this was the best fireworks they had ever seen.

what a great time at the fireworks. i went with a group of 20 and every kid- adult really enjoyed it. really got a sense of pride in being part of such a great community.
@andria- obviously you were not at the fireworks, if you were you would know a lot more than !% of the residents were there and wouldnt make such an inaccurate comment. probably better you didnt attend, better to keep the negativety at home.
wierd though- ive never came across a fl resident named andria galt

I was there, the article says hundreds, I would guesstimate between 2 & 3, in a town of 32,000+, her math is good, 99% were not there. Even if it's 600 that were there, what's the difference between 98% and 99%, the vast majority where not there. I even saw a few familiar faces in Weehawken tonight for the largest show in the nation. Cost to Fair Lawn taxpayers, $0.

you know tommy thousands of ny public employees get overtime pay because of the fireworks you enjoyed. shouldnt you be fighting the good fight for those NY taxpayers who dont support the fireworks but are FORCED to pay for them?
is it safe to assume that you believe: it's ok for new yorkers tax money to towards YOUR entertainment but when YOUR tax money goes to local fireworks or a pool it is not ok?
to me it's pretty hypocritical to complain about your tax money gonig towards entertainment while you enjoy "free" fireworks at the expense of ny tax payers

That's an interesting case you make, but first, I don't live in NY, I live here. Second, Macy's pickups the tab. NYC actually makes money from the increased hotel rates (through taxes) and additional money spent eating out.
Then there is public safety. Fair Lawn corrals people into enclosed area with few exits. Considering Allendale's display was raining down ashes, etc, onto onlookers, it doesn't take much to imagine how bad it could be here.

Serge, we're happy you enjoyed the display at an astronomical cost to us taxpayers. What other Gov't subsidy do you enjoy?

We all enjoy freedom- we pay to celebrate. Its a blessing and you are so caught up in a few dollars per household you are blind to it. I enjoy a police force, military, fire dept., great school, parks etc... Take a second to see the town without them. What is left? A few dollars in your pocket? Good things aren't cheap. Stop whining and go to Venezuela or Cuba. Try complaining there and maybe you will understand how great our way of living is and how why we must keep certain traditions.

Wait till the numbers come out to see whether it was subsidized or not. Apparently some years the fireworks have brought in a surplus that was used to pay for other township services (library hours)-- according to a previous Patch article.
Mind you, most town's fireworks displays don't end up with any cost recovery, so rather than bitching maybe you should be thanking those of us who pay the fee to get into Memorial park to see them instead of freeloading on their friends' lawns.
(Most towns of any size that I've lived in -- in other states-- have had fireworks; the only cost recovery was either selling food or sometimes charging for parking.)

If you would like to " see " how happy the people were last night, and how much fun everybody had, check out my video later tonight. I walked around for almost two hours before the fireworks started ( as I do every year ), and you'll see why FL should always keep this event.
Zak showed you the fireworks - I'm going to show you the people who were there.

@bah booshka- first off im assuming your name bah booshka is trying to poke fun at my name having russian decent, however i am proud of my heritage and lucky to live in a welcoming town like fair lawn. your fake name only shows your maturity and lack of character.
myself and many other "taxpayers" enjoyed the fireworks. ive lived in fl for 36 yrs and have enjoyed the fireworks every single one of those years. im not going to sit here and argue with someone why events such as fireworks are important for a community. honestly i feel bad for you if you are that unintelligent that you think you and a few other people trolling the internet on fake names are going to change our great community.
the fireworks have been in FL since i moved here 36 years ago and they will be until a pass away in FL. Get over it or move.
Wayne look forward to the video- however these trolls will ignore it and keep being negative

"How would you rate Fair Lawn's Fireworks Display this year compared to year's past?"
It's "years past." The plural of year is years. Year's means belonging to a year: "The year's best movie is...."

Waiting for the hobgoblins to pour out of the woodwork and complain about the cost of every little thing in town is like trolling for cats with a rotten fish. The fireworks are a fine celebration of our nation's history that were called for by Jefferson and Adams - and those that whine about the "waste" are ignorant about the basis for them and their own history.

Zak - an incident occurred at the end of the fireworks. My daughter said that there appeared to be a malfunction at the end, with a shell exploding either prematurely or failing to shoot upwards and igniting a small fire that had to be extingushed, and the show ended immediately at that point. Any word on what happened?

@Deleted I can check into it for you. I also thought initially that it looked like some sort of malfunction had occurred, but the resulting "fire" ended up looking -- at least from my vantage point -- like an American Flag. So I just assumed it was planned as the coda to the fireworks.

I think that was the igniting of the American Flag thingie on the ground. I thought it was a misfire at first too but then saw the flag.

I love fireworks and go to many towns to see them. Paramus was great (and free). Ridgewoods are usually really good and we get a good spot for free. Fair Lawn's were very nice, however, were they worth $16 for my daughter and me? No. Especially since there was a ton of ash and particles falling all over us. If I didn't pay and that happened it would have been fine. Also, to have all those people and one exit out through a tiny fence opening was just an accident waiting to happen. Poor people with wheelchairs and strollers couldn't get through. If there was a fire or emergency where you had to leave quickly, there would have been a massacre.
Hopefully they will take the ash and poor exits into consideration next year. Also, i'll be finding a free place to see them next year!

It was a nice show, but it was short and on the wrong day. For a council that talks so much about interlocal agreements, it was nice to see they were checking for IDs. Maybe next year we can organize a bus to Paramus and save a fortune.

All these people complaining about the cost of fireworks ( at about $20K I believe, some to be reimbursed by donations and admission) said nothing when it was learned a town employee already making $140K was just given another $10K raise. It amazes me how quickly and fervently they are willing to take away things that benefit themselves and their neighbors to happily redistribute that money into the pockets of a few.

Bellair it's much more than the "price" . There's cost of Public Works employees, Police ,fuel for vehicles and firetrucks, insurance ....etc.
I will agree there are definatly other issues and you hit on one. However, we must address ALL in these tough economic times

My family had a good time at the fireworks this year-- we paid our $25, so don't bitch at us. The fireworks were very pretty.
However, I had some minor quibbles. There were a lot of 'noise' fireworks this year, seemed like more than in the previous 2 years, and the falling debris (weather conditions I guess) was annoying. We got there at 7:45 and by the time the fireworks started I had a headache from the music selections-- but our tween loved them... it would have been nice if the DJ we couldn't escape had planned a less bat-mitzvah oriented playlist, maybe some patriotic songs BEFORE the fireworks went off and we couldn't hear anything.
too much music

@Jenne, you paid more then "(y)our $25", you also subsidized the balance on your property taxes like the rest of us. While I am glad you enjoyed it, there were over 30,000 people who paid too and didn't. Thank us.
