Local rabbis will gather Saturday night at the Fair Lawn Jewish Center for Sweet Tastes of Torah, a fun night of solidarity, discussion and music.

The FLJC’s Rabbi Ronald Roth and Temple Beth Sholom’s Rabbi Baruch Zeilicovich are just two of the more than 25 area rabbis who will be teaching one-hour classes at the event, which celebrates the rhythm and music of Jewish life. 

The night will begin at 6:50 p.m. with a special musical Havdalah (a service marking the end of the Sabbath). Participants will then choose to attend two of more than 25 one-hour classes.

Rabbi Roth will discuss two songs—"Ein Kelokeinu" and "Adon Olam"—sung at the end of the Shabbat morning service.

“It is important to learn about the history and meaning of our prayers and songs,” Roth said. “I will present a poem by the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, which brings a different take on "Ein Kelokeinu" and see how "Adon Olam" is about the spiritual journey we all take during our lives.”

Rabbi Zeilicovich will speak about the psychology that underlies Jewish rituals.

Sweet Tastes of Torah is sponsored by the North Jersey Board of Rabbis and supported by the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, and more than two dozen synagogues and learning projects in northern New Jersey.

Admission is $15 per person for those who pre-register by Wednesday, Feb. 1, or $20 (cash or check only) at the door.
