Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook Police Increase Visibility at Schools

Police officers are making an effort to be seen at district public schools this week to allay parental fears.

Update: Fair Lawn will extend its police school detail -- stationing a highly visible officer at all schools, manpower-permitting -- through Friday.

Police officers and patrol vehicles have been stationed at both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook schools this week to allay the fears of both parents and students still shaken from Friday's school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

The Fair Lawn Police Department has arranged to have an officer at each of the district's 10 public schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times through Wednesday, manpower-permitting, Sgt. Richard Schultz said.

Saddle Brook police chief Bob Kugler said his department had increased its uniformed and marked police vehicle presence around all of the district's schools, especially at the beginning and end of the school day.

"We realize and are sensitive that the horrible tragedy in Newtown, Conn. gives all of us heightened concern for the safety of our children," he said. "Our police presence, care and concern will hopefully ease some of the uncomfortable feelings parents and other guardians may have."

Kugler said Saddle Brook police would maintain their presence in and around schools going forward, and that Deputy Chief Bob White, who serves on the Saddle Brook Board of Education, would act in a dual role to keep school security front of mind.

While Fair Lawn may extend its officers' school details for the remainder of this week -- up until winter break -- Schultz said parents should not expect it to become a permanent practice.

Posting an officer at every school is neither feasible due to current force levels nor guaranteed to prevent a motivated shooter from entering the building and opening fire, Schultz said.

He suggested that parents and educators use last week's school shooting as an opportunity to reevaluate and raise awareness of school safety procedures.

So another words after winter break our schools won't be safe. There should be an officer there every day to protect our children.

If the teachers are armed, there will be no more shootings.

Absolutely correct !!! An armed citizenry is the best defense against crime.

Arming teachers is one of the stupidest responses there could be to a school shooting. Or are you going to add mandatory training to keep up the skills they would have to have to safely carry weapons in a classroom full of minors, including those with the same mental health issues as the responsible parties in school shootings have? This is not the Wild West or a comic book where the hero whips out a gun and all the bad guys are killed. In real life, in a room full of terrified kids, to expect a teacher to fire a gun? Nuts.

In the states where there are armed citizens, the crime rate is very low. Some towns in the US require residents to own a fire arm. The only stupidity is someone who is not willing to change with the environment.

There is an officer assigned to the High School, with an office there, every day. But every office assigned to a school is not patroling the streets or doing anything else. To keep this up, we'd need twice the number of officers we already have.

Well, if the Principal had a gun and was properly trained to use it, we wouldn't be burying 26 innocent people. She was the first person to confront Adam Lanza. With a 9mm, she could have prevented this tragedy. But the Liberals will keep saying that guns are dangerous. How many more innocent people have to die? Nuts will always have access to guns. Why not give the responsible people the right to defend themselves. And for the record, that AR15 didn't have legs, nor did it have a mind of its own. It was held and used by a mentally disturbed individual. That Principal died trying to protect her school and her kids. These are the people we want to have guns.

Amen !!! But it is a liberal fantasy to disarm the citizenry and take over the government

The article clearly says it all: The police is stationed only to "ease some of the uncomfortable feelings", not to protect our kids. In other words, nothing is done to really increase safety of our schools.

While we're at it, lets think about everything else we can kill with: Knife, baseball bat, car, poison, rock, throwing out of a window, punch, physical force....... Now, some of the ways we can die without intending: DWI, texting when driving, alcohol poisoning, stepping into an empty elevator shaft, hit by a car, falling off a roof, trip and fall......

Violent crimes committed with a gun are almost always done by a criminal. Law abiding citizens with guns almost never commit acts of violence with guns.

can you morons stop trying to compare a knife, baseball bat, or a rock to a AR15.... you people do realize how stupid you sound.
chris simple question: if you were locked in a 40' x 40' room with a psycho would you rather him be armed with a knife, a rock, or an AR15?
yes there are many ways to kill people but not as precise and quickly as an AR15.
you people always blow things into something they are not. majority of people arent trying to take away your guns. they are trying to take away these assualt weapons that are meant for war and have no reasonable use for civilians or hunters. will banning such guns make major improvement in our safety, maybe not but it definelty wont hurt.

im not against concealed weapons however a principal taken by suprise with a concealed 9mm still wouldnt have much of a chance against a psycho with a plan and a A15. however if an A15 wasnt legal for his mother to purchase the principal with a concealed weapon might have had a better chance against a couple pistols

also chris you and many other gun advocates state that criminals and psychopaths like lanza will commit these crimes whether assualt weapons are legal or not.
if thats the case what is an armed policemen gonig to do if someone plants a bomb at the school. wouldnt the armed policemen at every school be a waste of money then.
i also assume you dont like high taxes, who is going to pay for these extra policemen at every school? next are we going to need an armed policeman at every day care, little league game, etc?

I would want the freedom to carry a gun so if I should ever get trapped i a 40x40 room with a psycho, I could defend myself.
Ad as for being a moron, a weapon is a weapon. And an AR15 is not a precise weapon. If you ever shot one, you would know they ride up after 2 shots and require a lot of effort to control. And with that, your first 2 shots need to be accurate. They are very tricky weapons. But, if you have tons of ammo and unarmed people in front of you, I guess accuracy isn't a real issue being that you'd have enough time to reload and continue.
And as for taking away guns, Liberals want a ban on SEMI automatic weapons. That's roughly 95% of all guns in circulation.
And the Principal wasn't taken by surprise, moron. He shot his way into the school. More than enough time to stand and fire as the animal was coming through the door.

a weapon is not a weapon. there is a verying degree of weapons and anyone who says a weapon is a weapon is an idiot. is a bomb a bomb? im pretty sure that japenese can tell you the difference between a pipe bomb and a nuclear bomb.

If the safety of our schools and children are not feasible, I don't know what is! We should have a security guard inside our schools at all times. So after winter break it's basically back to normal. Well not for parents!

Are you going to force the teachers to carry guns before or after you make them work for less money? Before or after you take away their unions, collective bargaining and health care and pensions? Before or after you lower standards and hire inexperienced people? What if teachers did have guns and a bunch of curious kids distracted the teacher to get the gun? What if the teacher thinking there's an intruder shoots a child or an innocent parent? Those educators were heroes. Don't belittle their heroism because they didn't have a gun.

You want to keep schools safe with guns, hire more trained police. Start a jobs program. Use the National Guard, but keep the guns in the hands of the people that are trained daily in how to use them, not pawn off the responsibility to someone who is trained in education because you're too cheap. The shooter's mother had legal guns and was "trained" in how to use them. They didn't save her, did they?

No. You don't need trained police to protect a school. You need someone trained to react to someone walking into the school shooting. Proper use of a handgun is not exclusive to a police officer. What planet do you live on? And I'd be willing to throw a couple extra bucks to a person to carry a gun. And I never said arm all teachers.

Chris, I live on the planet of reality, not the planet of television idolatry. The Ct shooter's mother was trained how to use a handgun. Didn't help her. Or maybe you want to hire people like George Zimmerman?

Guns are serious. They're not props.

Yes you do, and the mother was asleep. Either way, I would question the mother's judgement for keeping an AR15 in reach of someone who clearly had a mental deficiency. The case involving George Zimmerman doesn't even apply here. But nice try.

why didn't I think of that

Bellairberdan you are absolutely right. There are people asking that a cop be placed in everyschool. Those are the same people who think cops make too much money. Cops were laid off because the people claimed that they could no longer afford them. You want more cops? well the two percent tax cap makes that very difficult for towns. For now, the cops that are being hired are replacing those that retire; that is it. If the people want more cops to man the schools then prepare for a significant tax increase, either board of Ed or municipal.

Throw a couple of extra bucks... Tell that to Gov. Christie. The 2% tax cap prevents a tax increase that is enough to pay these extra salaries.
