Fair Lawn Republicans Announce 2013 Borough Council Nominees

Dan Dunay and Amy Lefkowitz will run on the Republican ticket for borough council in 2013.

The Fair Lawn Republican Club's hopes for retaining a council majority in 2014 officially rest on Dan Dunay and Amy Lefkowitz.

The organization announced Thursday that its members had chosen the two young Republicans as their 2013 borough council nominees. Dunay and Lefkowitz will run in lieu of Deputy Mayors Jeanne Baratta and Ed Trawinski, who intend to retire from public office after their terms expire at the end of the year.

Dunay, a third generation Fair Lawn resident and principal at New York financial services firm Centerview Partners, said he was honored to receive the group's endorsement.

"It means so much to me that we work together to keep Fair Lawn strong," Dunay said in a statement. "I want to do whatever I can to help Fair Lawn and its residents thrive.”

Lefkowitz, an attorney who lives in town with her husband, Tom, and their young daughter, Hannah, said she was excited about the opportunity to shape Fair Lawn's future.

"I have a young family," Lefkowitz said in a statement, "so it’s critical that we protect Fair Lawn for years to come."

If elected, both nominees are committed to reelecting John Cosgrove as mayor and upholding his principles of limiting taxes, maintaining Fair Lawn's amenities, supporting local community, volunteer and religious organizations, and listening to resident concerns.

“I am delighted that Dan and Amy have agreed to run for Borough Council," Cosgrove said in a statement. "They are both extremely qualified candidates who will bring critical skills and perspectives to the Council. I need Dan and Amy to help me continue providing strong, responsible leadership for Fair Lawn.”

The Fair Lawn Democrats have yet to announce their nominees for the 2013 election.

A liberal from Harvard and an Lair-for-hire, no wonder so few people like Republicans.

I would like to congratulate Mayor Swain! We'll have you back in your office in January.

@Jack K - Right, but any additional Republican primary candidates won't be endorsed by the Republican Club. The Club is resting its hopes on these two. I apologize if that wasn't clear.

Congratulations Amy & Dan. The town is fortunate to have two intelligent, accomplished and concerned citizens step forward and commit themselves to community service. The two of you represent the very best of our town and your backgrounds’ are a microcosm of our community’s proud history. While the challenges facing every community are difficult, Fair Lawn will be better off for having leaders of your character, creativity and compassion working to maintain our quality of life. Thank you and Good Luck.

I'm sure you saw the results: 2/3 Dems; 1/3 Reps.

I am curious who the third party will take votes from, especially if they have two people running.

I'm looking forward to working with Dan and Amy.i know that both will be great council people when elected. It's a shame that only minutes after declaring that they were candidates that the vile trash and hate has started. I urge the people of Fair Lawn to reject this behavior and listen to the issues from both sides and make an intelligent choice in November.
Lenny to answer your question I don't take any compensation from the Borough for being on the Council and feel quite sure that Dan & Amy won't either.

Mr Cosgrove as mayor of our town I would have expected you to stay above the fray. To call any resident "vile trash" and accuse dissenters of being haters is something few of us would expect from you given your distinguished record of volunteering. As Mr Agosta points out, this year, like the last election, there are more than 2 sides. It sounds like we can expect some fire works this year.

While you were likely a part of it, clearly these two were chosen in a backroom deal. As I understand it, they weren't put up for a vote among the Republican Club nor do I remember reading anything on the Patch or elsewhere that the secret committee which was considering anointing the party "standard bearers". Why wasn't this addressed at the County Convention? How undemocratic!

Your party is in the majority and can put the petty insignificant issue of the stipend and benefits to a vote and an end. Could it be that it hasn't happened yet because Deputy Mayor "Poppycock" Trawinski is on the take too?

Come on John, we know you, we expect more from you given your past record. Will the real John Cosgrove please stand up!?! Or have you just become another sleazy politician?

Mr. Hunter: Your political leanings are clear since all you do is sling mud. I am sure Mr. Dunay is not as liberal as those he is and will be running against and to label someone just because they are in the legal field as "liar" is despicable. Grow up and cast your vote. That's how elections work. For our sake I hope the electorate votes to keep John Cosgrove as Mayor.

This should be a big question in the next election: Who will waive the expensive health care benefits. Part time employees of our borough don't receive the benefits the politicians do? Another good question is: Are the politicians paying the graduated % that the employees are now paying? Let's all do the "Waive" in 2013... waive those benefits for Fair Lawn!

Is creating an elite ruling class that discourages the participation of the common man a good idea? Mr Dunay has already described that a $25 per hour INCREASE for a politically appointed position was "nominal" i.e. trifling, insignificant.

haha bellair you are so out of your mind its commical. i lean liberal and your comments actually make me sick. you take every liberal talking point and post it on here. are you really calling these FL residents elitist? im pretty sure dan lives in an apartment in FL and youre trying to turn him into Romney.
the $25 dunay was taling about was comparing it to what other towns pay that posistion, stop taking things out of context

No hypos. He was comparing that amount directly to what the last administration was paying someone in the same position. Do you think a $25 an hour increase is insignificant for the same job in the same town?

But thanks for coming in under a new account every so often to tell me how liberal you are.

how about the pay raise your boy obama gave biden for doing the same job as past vice presidents? o i see when a republican gives a raise they are elitists, but when a democrat gives a pay raise to a millionaire vice president its justified.
your thinking republicans: wrong democrats: right even if they do the same thing is the problem w/ this country and you are just as bad as the extremes on the other side.
if you have a problem with these two running for council, why dont you run against them? you seem to think you know it all so why not run for council?

Hold on, Mr Dunay is Harvard Liberal who is a Principal at Centerview Partners a Wall St merger and acquisition company. Just because he chose to purchase an apartment so he doesn't have to cut his own grass does not make him a common working man.

Centerview Partners calls itself a leading independent investment banking and advisory firm. The firm provides advice on mergers and acquisitions, financial restructurings, valuation, and capital structure to companies, institutions and governments. Since the founding of Centerview in 2006, they have advised on more than $425 billion of transactions.

"Harvard Liberal who is a Principal at Centerview Partners a Wall St merger and acquisition company."
tax payer first, you say these things like it is a bad thing. is it bad thing to go to a great school and then work for a successful company?
i went to high school w/ dan and although we werent great friends it was easy to tell how hard he worked to get into harvard. you make it sound like going to one of the most prestigious school in the world is a bad thing.
he now has a good job, is that a problem to you? would he be more suited for council if he went to community college and worked for the town?
accomplishments like graduating from harvard and getting a good job are things to be proud of. i hope if you have children you dont encourage them to not set their goals high on college or career goals.

Dan should be proud of his accomplishments. He is like a local Mitt Romney, a typical RINO, just not as prolific in making money. He even gave money to Mitt's campaign. I am going to hold my nose and vote for these two in November, only because I suspect the Democrats will be nominating people who are more extreme and more liberal.

I for one think its more important to teach kids values than the value of things. This way when they grow up, they understand not everything gets a price tag, not everything is for sale.

Someone please explain how government works to "john p', since he does not understand that Congress controls the pay of the President and Vice President; the salary of the Vice President is unchanged since 1989 except for a cost of living increase as dictated by the Government Salary Reform Act. When a stupid person makes an unfounded claim, does the party matter?

As an avid Patch reader and occasional commenter, I would truly like to extend a warm welcome to some of the new personalities who have sprung up as a result of this article - many on the same day, even! Whether supportive or not, it is still great to see that this ticket is creating a more politically aware town.

Let me make it clear - I know Dan and have no idea why someone is implying with this name in a post to claim I have a problem with his education, or with him. This is also the one and only screen name I use here, and have made it clear to anyone offline who asks me what name I use here. I have no idea who I will vote for in this election since I don't yet know who else is running and don't belong to either party.

Sure is politics as normal for Fair Lawn, tho, to see where the mud is being tossed and by whom. And, knowing what I resently figured out about the personas, expect it to get even nastier. If as much effort went to improving the community as is spent on the biennial manure tossing from both sides, we'd be living in a better place - but I am not holding my breath.
