Fair Lawn Sweeps Cinnaminson, Will Face Southern in State Title Rematch
The Fair Lawn Boys Volleyball team dispatched Cinnaminson, 25-21, 25-19, in the Tournament of Champions semifinal Tuesday.
Fair Lawn never trailed Tuesday against Central Jersey sectional champ Cinnaminson en route to victory in their Tournament of Champions semifinal match at South Brunswick High School.
With their 25-21, 25-19 defeat of the Pirates, Fair Lawn returns to the state volleyball championship where they'll face top-seed Southern Regional, a 26-24, 25-20 winner over Bayonne in the other semifinal.
Fair Lawn (36-4) didn't play its best volleyball Tuesday, but it was enough to get past the Pirates for the third time this season and continue the team's hot stretch -- the Cutters haven't dropped a set since banged-up outside hitters Chris Nugent and Luke St. John returned from injuries early in the state tournament.
“It wasn’t the cleanest game on either end," coach Peter Zisa told NJ.com afterward, "but sometimes you just have to say ‘a win is a win’ and now we are onto the championship game.”
In Thursday's state title match, Fair Lawn will face Southern, the Ocean County powerhouse the Cutters beat 25-17, 25-23 to win last year's volleyball state championship.
This year, Southern has handed Fair Lawn two of its four losses and is the only team to beat the Cutters when they were at full strength.
Fair Lawn's defense of its state title is scheduled for 5 p.m. at South Brunswick High School.
