Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years of Service
The Fair Lawn Volunteer Fire Department celebrates 100 years of service on Saturday with a festive celebration at Memorial Park.
The Fair Lawn Fire Department will celebrate 100 years of volunteer service to the community on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the celebration, which runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and includes free food, drinks, kid rides and the live band, The Shots.
Beer will be served, but the fire department asks that if you're going to drink alcohol you purchase a $5 commemorative fire department mug that will be on sale at the event Saturday.
Other 100th anniversary fire department apparel, including t-shirts, will also be sold at the celebration, which is being funded entirely through local donations.
Over 125 businesses, including elite sponsors Columbia Bank and Kuiken Brothers, donated to the cause by purchasing ad space in a commemorative journal that the fire department has created for the 100th anniversary celebration.
Fair Lawn's Fire Department, founded in November 1911, has four companies and roughly 130 members who respond to some 800 fire calls annually.
"It’s unique, it’s fun and it’s something good you’re doing for the town," said Company No. 4 member Tom Carney, a 30-year fire department veteran and ex-chief who helped organize Saturday's 100th anniversary event.

Did the state ever charge them with illegally selling alcohol without a license and serving minors?

Nelly, as Chariman of the FD Anniversary Committee I can assure you that we did have an NJ ABC License Permit for that day and ID's were checked for alcohol along with 4 police officers working with us (paid for that through fund raising) to make sure no minors were drinking. If you have any further questions we can answer them by calling the FD office at 201-794-5398 and ask for myself or our Chief of Department.

While I was not able to attend, I understand it was a very well run event with good food and fun for the kids. In addition to providing us with a great service in fire protection, FLFD did a great job in looking out for tax payers. Tom, thank you for your service.
