Last week's Rotary Club of Fair Lawn 4th Grade Spelling Bee spanned 10 rounds and took more than two hours, but in the end, Radburn Elementary's Veronica Gomez outlasted all 33 other district spellers to prevail as champion.
Two representatives from each fourth grade class in the district -- 34 students total -- competed for the district spelling crown.
Class representatives who competed in the bee -- held April 18 at the Community Center -- qualified through prior competitions at each of the district's six elementary schools.
Language Arts Supervisor Mary Ann Pasuit compiled the event's word list with assistance from Fair Lawn High School secretary Cathy Schofield.
In addition to the Rotary's spelling bee, created as a natural offshoot of its 3rd Grade Dictionary Distribution program, Rotarians also sponsor Project REAL (Rotary Encourages Academic Learning), the FLHS Interact Club, RYLA and scholarships for children continuing their education.
