Hurricane Sandy: Everything You Need to Know in Fair Lawn/Saddle Brook

Another thought is signing up for Nixle – a service that sends text messages alerts in your town directly to your smart phone. Saddle Brook's OEM coordinator has been issuing Nixle alerts for the past week.

New Jersey residents can register to receive Nixle messages by sending a text message with their zip code to 888777 (data rates may apply depending on your plan).

During the storm, I'll be out as often as possible assessing the situation (when it's safe), taking pictures and reporting via Facebook and Twitter. But I won't be able to get to everything, so I'm asking each of you to please help me out when you can and let me know what's going on in your neighborhood. Everyone was incredible in helping get the word out to me last year during Irene so that I could get the word out to the rest of the community. So please don't hesitate to send me photos, videos, notices that trees or power lines are down or roads are closed.

Closures, Cancellations and Accommodations

  • Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook Public Schools and St. Anne School in Fair Lawn are closed on Monday and Tuesday
  • Fair Lawn has cancelled garbage pickup on Monday
  • Fair Lawn has cancelled recycling pickup on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
  • Fair Lawn has cancelled minibus service on Monday
  • Fair Lawn has suspended overnight parking until Thursday at 2 a.m. 
  • The nearest shelter for evacuated Fair Lawn residents is Bergen Community College
  • The nearest shelter for evacuated Saddle Brook residents is at the Saddle Brook Senior Center
  • Saddle Brook residents can house vehicles in the parking garage at Park 80 West Plaza, located at the intersection of Pehle Avenue and N. Midland Avenue
  • Calls to 911 should only be for life-threatening emergencies

I thought I heard that the FL Community Center would be used as a shelter.....is that true?

@Wayne - Not this year. In sticking with the "super shelter" model that FEMA has recommended since Hurricane Katrina, Fair Lawn is telling residents who need to evacuate and don't have a relative or friend to stay with, to head to the shelter at Bergen Community College.

Wayne, The Community Center will be used as a shelter for our first responders and employees. In the event of a power failure and due to the projected length of this storm the Community Center will serve as a place where they can eat , shower and sleep. The County has set up a shelter at Bergen Community College for residents. In the event that we need to evacuate residents we will take them to our Community Center then transport them to Bergen Community by bus.

Thank you Zak for making contact with my 91 yr old mother in Fair Lawn. It was such a relief to hear that she is safe. Besides not being able to reach her, I couldn't even get through to any of the emergency services, so I really appreciate what you did for me.
