Joint Energy Purchases Realize Significant Savings for Borough
This year Fair Lawn is purchasing both electricity and natural gas through an energy collective.
Fair Lawn has saved more than $20,000 through the first quarter of the year by purchasing its electric supply collectively through the New Jersey Sustainable Energy Joint Meeting (NJSEM).
The figure represents a nearly 20 percent savings from what the borough would have paid had it purchased energy independently from PSE&G.
While the borough's energy is still provided by PSE&G, it's purchased collectively at a reduced rate through NJSEM, a group of approximately 160 other New Jersey municipalities and authorities.
This is the second year the borough has purchased electricity through NSEM. Pleased with the savings it reaped last year, the council agreed in January to enter into a one-year contract with the NJSEM for natural gas purchases as well.

We spent $80,000 on electricity? Does that include the schools?

@Thomas - It includes "all Borough buildings and facilities." I don't believe schools are included. The cost range is now $30-$33K per month. It had been $36-$41K. The $20,000 savings is just for the first quarter of the year (so through March).

Why / you want to turn the lights off in the schools?

I was a bit surprised by the number. Last year I spent under $1000 for electricity, the borough spent 330x times that at a lower rate? I was just looking for clarification.
Thanks Zak!
