Memorial Pool Opens Today
After months of hard work getting the pool prepared, it opens officially on Friday.
The Memorial Pool season started officially Friday morning.
Devastated by Hurricane Irene-related flooding last year, but left untouched through the end of the year, getting the pool ready for summer became borough manager Tom Metzler's immediate top priority upon taking over the borough's reins this January.
From the beginning, Metzler reiterated that he would have the pool open on time, and, despite the doubts of some residents, he has succeeded.
Metzler attributes the pool's turnaround to a dedicated crew of borough employees who worked tirelessly to make sure the pool season would go off without a hitch.
The borough replaced the damaged pool trailers with three new construction trailers and had the entire job fully reimbursed by its insurance carrier.
For pool food, the borough has contracted with a concession vendor who will operate both a fully-contained trailer with a variety of food choices, as well as a separate refreshment stand.
A covered outdoor dining area has replaced the old air-conditioned indoor dining room, and guests will be able to order from a menu that is actually more extensive than what was previously offered.
"I really actually think the residents will see very little in change," Metzler said back in May.
If you haven't done so yet, but are interested in joining, membership rates are as follows, from the borough's website:
Family - $ 175
(Father, mother & all children not having completed 12th school year. Also, any college student up to 23 years of age who lives at the parents Fair Lawn address)
Single Adult - $ 85
(Past 13th school year or 16th birthday and not attending school.)
Junior - $ 55
(Student not having completed 12th school year.)
Senior Citizen - $ 20
(65 years or older)
Non-Swimmer - Free
(Individual using beach, back beach, but not swimming)

8 samples of water were collected on opening day, had 6 tests at three pool places, 2 each. 4 samples from the bottom, four from the surface. All three pool places advised the chlorine was way too low and the ph was wrong. I sure hope nobody gets sick, the other two samples were sent out for more extensive tests.
I wonder if the next lawsuit comes from the pool....

The edge of the water was littered with white little balls presumably undissolved chlorine, there were many leaves and even a gold fish.

perfect example of waste as stated above and how few use it. how much is this going to cost the town when the season ends income as to expense. all this talk about change at election time but no one has the guts to make change and say here is where we are at and sorry the money is needed else where this year. thank you for the over 2 per cent tax increase which thanks to that a few can use the pool today while others work so they can pay that tax bill that never goes lower. Zak, Please find out exactly how many BOROUGH RESIDENTS attend also. The fact that the pool has been made available to so many towns bt the politicians tells me that FAIR LAWN RESIDENTS are footing the bill here, and this is losing money every year! Why the need to open to the pool for out of town residents if we were at capacity? Because its a loss! Public Safety over election time gimmicks!

Biggest waste is by all these complainers, wasting the opportunity to spend some time cooling off for a great price, less then one or two trips to the Jersey Shore. With out the hassle of the crowds or Parkway traffic.

Mushroom how does it become the responsibility of the taxpayer to underwrite YOUR lame substitute for a trip to the Shore?
The cost to the taxpayer does not balance out with the plain lack of use. I never said the pool wasnt nice or that i think its expensive to the membership, its about the exhorbatant cost to the taxoayers.if this thing was financially sound then why are many other towns offered membership? Answer: very low participants from fair lawn equals negative in the budget lines so the hope is to break even ...WAKE UP!

I think in these hard economic times 185 for a family and 85 for a single pass is a little high. maybe if the prices were lower, more people would join. Me, personally, I purchased a pass and the pool is great. I would never want to see them get rid of the pool, especially the sand. The kids laying down there in the sand and its easier for a family to go there, rather then spend so much money on gas going down the shore for the day. I dont understand the people on here who have to hate. If you dont use the pool, fine....dont knock it. Mostly every town has a pool and so should Fair Lawn
Tommy P

most towns DO NOT have pools. As for the price it costs much more than $185 per family to run the pool. Its a great example of government mismanagement. If you really believe in the pool, how about a donation to help defer the costs?

Flres- #1 i am not an employee, #2 I did not go to flhs. I'm just tired of the complete MORONS who complain about everything in town, and have no idea what they are talking about. SECONDLY, how is it that the taxpayer should bear the cost of entertainment of children that hail from un involved families? There are plenty of programs in town for kids of all ages. Sounds like your one of those people that wants everyone else to raise your children
FLResident98
7:18 am on Sunday, June 24, 2012
Please, FLres, name these numerous programs in town. Are you referring to the ones at the library? I see plenty of close the library statements on the patch. Are you talking about the rec programs? Plenty of statements that we should end those, too. The pool is part of parks and recreation, as the town pool should be. It is available to all residents to use and enjoy. Should we close the parks along with the pool? There are many ammenities that I choose not to utilize in town but it does not bother me that they exist. They are the programs that make a community a community and a desireable place to live.
The way people talk on the patch Fair Lawn should close everything that makes a community desireable to families. A town that does not encourage families to move in a town that will die. It is not about wanting everyone else to raise their children. It is about the reality that it does take a village. Being part of the community limits the childrens ability to cause mischief because when everyone is looking out for each other the kids know that whatever they do will get back to their parents.

Its nice to see you don't care how much the town spends, I hope you realize that money comes from somewhere. ALL OF OUR TAXES. Please feel free to include a little extra in your next payment. If your mortgage company does it for you, please feel free to send a check to "Borough of Fair Lawn" 8-01 Fair Lawn Ave, Fair Lawn, NJ. They gladly would accept a donation.
In the interim, please stop advocating it be taken from the rest us. Unless of course you plan to open up a cigar room with pole dancers, paintball field, canoe rides and shooting ranges too. Maybe we should open them up to other towns? For free like the Sr Center?

Maybe its a small minority of us, but if you want a community pool, you don't need tax dollars for that. We even have examples in Fair Lawn, come check out the Radburn pools. We even have 2 council members that work for private organizations which have multiple pools.
If the goal is to attract new residents, you must be for the Landmark project and the pending projects along 208. Since your for using tax dollars for entertaining, why not the cigar room? pole dancing? gun range? paint ball? bowling? Heck any other entertainment?

To Flres: it is my 1st amendment right to speak my mind. To use Mr. Cone's analogy, maybe you were raised in a gustapo state. I do not expect anyone else to raise my kids but me, but I would like them to enjoy the town they live in and maybe have it be better when I'm gone. How did you raise your kids? Chained in the basement?

I can’t believe that the Town Council is thinking of spending over a million dollars for a bath house, bathrooms and snack bar on the other side of the pool and park, away from the deep end of the pool and the picnic area. Something stinks. Remember the recreation center? First 500,000 for an addition, then it went to a 1.5 million dollar project, then to a 9 million dollar project, and the final cost, nearly 13 million dollars and it is called a Community Center. How much money does the town waist with the 13 million dollar Community Center. Thank you Councilman Mr. Cosgrove. Does the council have some other agenda that will end up costing the tax payers more money? I too love the pool, but there was nothing wrong with the trailers we used for over 10 years. The problem is when the flood came the town was not able to move them. What is going on here? Look around people, several streets need repair, business are closing and leaving the town and what is the council doing, spending millions for a pool that is used 10 weeks a year?

This is what it costs to live and be part of a great community. If you want a town with a different culture (one that does not have a pool, library, good schools, parks etc...) then you should think of moving to a place that places no value on its citizens or quality of life. Stop complaining and run for office or move.

We didn't sell out Fair Lawn. Fair Lawn's council did. Instead of building a community center that few people use, the land we were paying taxes on could have been bought for a fraction of the cost.
We didn't write and maintain ordinances which absolve builders of costs, the council did. This project maybe high profile right now, but just wait and see what is coming along 208.
As for our pool, not only do WE pay for it, with OUR money, we pay taxes to the town for having it. Our pools generate money for Fair Lawn, Inc, the town pools costs us hundreds of thousands each year, probably a $1,000,000+

No, Tommy P. I am not in favor of the landmark development or the other ones happening 208. I think they will overburden this town with traffic and have a negative effect on quality of life in the town.
As for your other questions: why not the cigar room? Smoking is not healthy which is the antithesis of parks and recreation. pole dancing? Are we talking a pole dancing class offered by parks and recreation? Sure, it is great exercise. gun range? I have no issue with a well planned place for people to practice shooting. paint ball? bowling? Heck any other entertainment? It would really depend on the entertainment. If it falls under a recreation that promotes outdoor activity and health and the budget supports it-then have at it.
Tommy P
10:12 am on Monday, June 25, 2012
So you are okay with taking money from unemployed people, elderly people on fixed incomes and others who are working hard to keep up to fund the entertainment of people who aren't. So long as it "promotes outdoor activity" would that include homelessness?
The government has no business taking money under threat of violence to fund entertainment. What is worse, our Rec Dept doesn't run most sports, a secretive organization with closed books which receives even more of our tax dollars does.
That's right, the town pays the rec employees, the parents pay Fair Lawn All Sports directly, the town pays them too. Nothing to see there, move along.

this is what i dont understand about people who complain about the pool:
i grew up in fair lawn, so did my father, and so did my grandmother. all of us spent our youth enjoying memorial pool, the public library, and other programs the town offered.
after college i could not afford to live in FL so i rented a modest house in a town that did not provide me with services like a pool or great public library.
after having two children, getting married and after years of hardwork i was able to purchase a house in fair lawn. i pay more taxes than i used to but now my children can grow up in a special town that offers great services and constructive activities. my grandma also still lives here and stays active/ healthy through FL's programs.
fair lawn has ALWAYS used tax payer money to support the pool, library, and other services. if you dont like it there are plenty of towns that do not off these services and you are free to move there. if you moved to fair lawn or remained in fair lawn and expected the borough to stop supporting the pool/ library even though no past history shows that happening- then you are not the sharpest tool in the box.
i like many other residents chose fair lawn because of these services. people chosing to pay additional taxes to live in a town that has ALWAYS provided these services makes a lot more sense then chosing to live in a town and then complain about the services they have ALWAYS provided
FLResident98

Yes, Tommy, I am okay with the tax dollars collected for the parks and recreation department being used for parks and recreation programs. If I did not want these amenities I would not have moved here. I enjoy living in a community. If I wanted to live in every man for himself paradise I would move somewhere where these amenities are not available.
As for all sports, I can't speak to that as I do not know enough about it. I do know that the summer swim team is a rec program not an all sports program.

I suppose all those people that want the pool closed can move to Glen Rock, or Hawthorne, or Ridgewood, or Paramus...oh wait,,all those towns have municipal pools too. Better yet, they shouldn't have moved to Fair Lawn to begin with, since the pool was already here.
I only regret the town still does not allow for resident day passes. I know many people who do not join because of the price, but would certainly go a few times at a day rate. I think the town is losing out on revenue.

Fair Lawn is a great town despite the waste of tax dollars. There are many good reasons to live here aside from the pool and wreck center. After all, 90%+ are not members of either, yet we all get to pay. The majority of us are not welcome at the Senior Center which is utilized by non-residents who pay nothing. The muni-bus drives around empty and our police force is under manned. Despite all this, we have a great community.
And yes, the pool does offer day passes. $10 weekdays, $20 for holidays/weekends. They even have a 10 pack for $75.

I don’t think the issue is spending tax dollars on Memorial Pool, Parks, Recreational Center, and the Library. I think it is more the poor decisions the council makes spending the tax money. The Council was told years ago by the town finance officer that financially the Community Center will cost a lot of money to run. The Council then decided to create a nonprofit and obtained a 13 million dollar loan from the county at twice the interest rate. All this was done behind the backs of the residents. I will bet they do the same thing with Memorial Pool.
