Officer Mary Ann Collura Remembered On Anniversary Of Death [Photo Gallery]
Tuesday was the ninth anniversary of the death of Fair Lawn police officer Mary Ann Collura, who was killed in action on April 17, 2003.
Community members crowded around the life-size bronze statue of Officer Mary Ann Collura Tuesday afternoon to remember the beloved officer on the ninth anniversary of her tragic death in the line of duty.
Fair Lawn Police Detective David Boone, the newly installed chaplain at Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church led the annual memorial ceremony, which was attended by dozens of community members, including council members, borough employees and past and present law enforcement officers.
"It's important for us to remember, and to never forget and to always hold those that are dear to us in our hearts," Boone said. "To remember [Mary Ann's] dedication, to remember her devotion to duty, to remember her fearlessness, to remember her love and care, to remember her smile and compassion, to remember her justice and mercy and to remember, especially, her willingness to sacrifice, and to remember her ultimate sacrifice."
Collura, an 18-year Fair Lawn Police Department veteran and its first female officer, was killed in the line of duty on April 17, 2003 following a vehicle pursuit that started in Clifton and ended on the lawn of the Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist Church on River Road.

I cannot believe it is 9 years ago. To me that tragedy still has not faded from my memory. I did not know her but always saw her around time in her uniform. I can still picture her.

She was source of support and safety through some difficult times. She was a true hero. My family and I knew her and we will never forget her.

I attended the brief service outside boro hall and I looked into some of the Officer's eyes, and I can see that since Officer Collura's passing things haven't gotten better, nothing changed for the positive. I then reflected upon the fact of the recent action's this council and other council's of past have pushed the layoff's, reduction in manpower, and all the other stuff you read, and all I had to say to myself was what a shame, this is how we treat the police officer's, the very people who protect us! We must do better as a society to protect our officer's, give them the very best, as when we do this, we will then have a better police force! If our police fail us, then we all fail!
