Man Wielding Claw Hammer Robbed Saddle River Road Bank
The Chase Bank on Saddle River Road was robbed around 6 p.m. Thursday.

A man with a claw hammer robbed the Chase Bank on Saddle River Road just before 6 p.m. Thursday, according to an FBI statement.
The man, described as a 5-foot-7-inch black male with a thin-to-medium build and a thin goatee, entered the bank wielding a claw hammer, grabbed a bank employee and demanded another employee fill an envelope with cash, according to the statement.
Upon receiving the envelope containing an undisclosed amount of cash, the man, who was wearing a tan hat, burgundy sweater and khaki pants, fled in an unknown direction, the FBI statement said.
Police and investigators from the county worked the scene for prints and spoke to witnesses Thursday night. Only employees were in the bank at the time of the robbery, Fair Lawn Police Sgt. James Krizek said.

A couple things about the police response to this incident: 1) Why were the responding (FLPD) officers on the other side of the RR tracks and had to wait for a passing train on FL Ave to continue to the scene instead of having units on the East side of the tracks to prevent any such issues when responding? What if this was a more serious and dangerous incident? Freight train? 2) How is it that GRPD was not first on the scene and/or responding at all considering their proximity to the scene? I would hate to see a death or serious injury due to these few issues that are so easily remedied.

where does the report say that the officers were caught on the wrong side of the tracks because of a train? and why do you assume that all the officers were on one side of the tracks and not the other? Officers are assigned to patrol on both sides of the tracks, at times due to call volume, types of details, arrests, the officers may all be on one side or the other.
If you know anything about Fair Law, you would know that even had a freight train been on the tracks blocking all crossings, emergency vehicle and yes police officers could still get across town via Rt 208 and the various exits on that highway.

@publius I witnessed this happening as I was crossing the tracks just before the train and saw the 2 responding cars behind me...they later passed me on FL Ave/Prospect on their way to the scene. I certainly don't need a report to tell me what I saw with my own 2 eyes.
I'm well aware of the roadways and access points in FL...my point is that to go Rt. 208 makes for a far longer response time. The most disturbing fact is that there was no mutual aid from GRPD...where were they? 1 block from their town...UNREAL!!!

since this is the 2nd time this particular bank has been robbed within a year, why hasn't the bank gotten a security guard or some other kind of protection? this is rediculous!

It is the policy of every bank that no member of staff is to attempt any kind of physical resistance to anyone who makes any kind of threat during a robbery. There have been occasional incidents when a staff member has tried to resist, and they are usually fired as a result.

It's not like you're yelling "HERE I COME!" Run and tackle him. Throw something at him; a stapler, pens, whatever. Distract him while someone calls the police. It's not a gun with a flying projectile. He has to hold it to use it. If he throws it at you, you move. Then that's it. He's got nothing else. He would know this and then he would probably run.
