Residents, Fire Fighters Escape Injury in Westmoreland Ave. House Fire

Cause of Monday afternoon fire remains under investigation, according to authorities

Firefighters battled a blaze at a two-story residential home on Westmoreland Avenue Monday afternoon.

According to Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Richard Schultz, the resident smelled smoke in the house and evacuated, along with her sister and a pet.

Police and firefighters were quickly dispatched to the location and had the fire, which had engulfed the home, contained within an hour. Holes were cut into the roof and the part of the home was cut for ventilation.

Schultz could not speculate on the level of damage inside but said smoke could be seen billowing out from both the Shop Rite and Westmoreland Elementary School.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Schultz said, adding the occupants and firefighters all escaped injury.

What would you rather pay?...the town its $5400 for saving you and/or your childs life, or your local Funeral home? As aVOLUNTEER firefighter in one of the pictures above i take great offense to your comment Adolpho

" . . . fire had engulfed the home."

Am I missing something? From the posted photos, I see no evidence of the home having been fully engulfed.

Adolpho- With a mouth as big as yours no firemen in the world would be strong enough to pull you out of a house fire.

I am smart enough to understand and you got the point this was not the place ADOLHHO to get that issue OUT. also show respect for others it takes a long time to gain respect and a short time to lose it.

SUMtingWong- theres a BIG difference between police and firemen and EMT. Police arent volunteers and Fair Lawn pays them very well- salaries are on public record if you care to check for yourself. before the layoffs i would see multiple cop cars parked next to eachother, with the engine running for hours at a time. our current police do a great job with the numbers they have. you also state 4 officers were layed off- i believe they re-hired atleast one of those officers and hired 2 new officers recently.

once again the topic digresses...the house was engulfed with fire, the residents ran out without getting injured, police, fire & ems all responded AND none of them were hurt throughout the entire process. That means no one was transported to the hospital in case anyone was curious. The pictures do not show the extent of the fire because they were taken after the fire was put out from the side that was not ON FIRE! So thank you FLPD, FLFD and FLVAC for doing an outstanding job as usual.

Of the fire fighters who responded, how many are also municipal employees?

@sumtingwong: I guess you were there cause I was and it was engulfed. I already know what the word means so rather than judge my word on a photo taken after the fact, why don't you judge me by what it looked like before the FD arrived...

Marty, i laugh at that comment because if that job was out of the Glen Rock fire department firefighting manual than they would have lost the house just like they did on Harristown road
