Steve Rothman says his political career is over, but the former eight-time Democratic congressman will continue to work behind the scenes with Washington power-brokers.

Rothman, an Englewood resident, lost a primary bid against Rep. Bill Pascrell following a controversial redistricting in 2012.

NJBIZ reports Rothman has accepted a job to lead a defense industry group at Newark-based law firm Sills Cummis and Gross, which is attempting to woo clients from the defense and aerospace industry.

"My experience with defense issues and my familiarity with how to get one's foot in the door for consideration at the Pentagon stems from my (six) years as a member of the House appropriations subcommittee on defense—a 15-person subcommittee that recommends all of the military spending for the U.S," he told NJBIZ.

Hundreds of billions in defense cuts are expected over the next decade, according to the White House.

In an op-ed published on PolitickerNJ.com, Rothman said he still believes in public service.

"I end my political career with heartfelt thanks towards every single person who has provided me with opportunities to learn and be of service, as well as to so many of my colleagues on both sides of the political aisle for your support and friendship," he wrote. "I continue to believe that elected public service is noble and important. Our democracy, in fact, depends on it."

Rothman starts at Sills Cummis and Gross on Monday.
