Saddle Brook Will Make Up School on Federal Holiday
As a result of class time missed because of Superstorm Sandy, Saddle Brook students will now have class on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday.
Saddle Brook public schools will not close for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January.
District students, who missed seven days of school following Superstorm Sandy, will make up for that lost time with a half-day on the federal holiday, recognized next year on Monday, Jan. 21.
Superintendent Kathryn Fedina said the decision to make up class on a national holiday was made because Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was already scheduled as a professional day for teachers.
"So instead of an all-day professional development day, students will come for a single session day and teachers will have a half day professional development day," Fedina explained.
The decision to hold class on a federal holiday did not sit well with some parents, including one who called it "crazy" on the Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Patch Facebook page.
Fair Lawn public schools, which were in a similar predicament due to class time missed, chose instead to eliminate a day from the student's winter recess in late February.

Disgusting. Dr King is an American hero that should be honored with a week off given the importance of his message of peace and humanity.
Turns out the content of Saddle Brook BOE's character is seriously lack.

Seriously? A week? Besides, how many people really celebrate those one off little days? Most people look forward to a day off. No one gives a rats a** about Columbus or King. Pretty sad.

really josh.... if the kids have the day off do you think they are reading quotes from MLK or doing anything related to MLK? all the kids see it as is a day off to sleep in, hang out with friends, or play video games.
a week off- are you kidding me, they already get too many days off.
if you wanted to honor MLK you should suggest that all the teachers make class about MLK during the half day.

Where is the RESPECT FOR THE AFRICAN, NATIVE AMERICAN, LATINO, ARAB, AND ALL THAT STOOD FOR PEACE, LOVE AND EQUALITY?
My question is why this holiday?
Why not take a day away from spring recess?
Or Memorial Day? Or Columbus Day? To may have fought and died for JUSTICE.
And yes it does turn out the content of Saddle Brooks BOE's character, values and moral convictions are seriously lacking and the surrounding areas, Elmwood Park and Garfield just to name a few as well have the same defects :( and it does not stop there. In 2011 they also did not have off so per a request with the Superintendent of schools for the 2013 calender year the day was given OFF.
After Sandy the calender was changed (is this even legal?)
and the Federal MLK Day taken back in our school district. So I will, as I did last year, keep my children out and celebrate the Great life works of the HONORABLE Rev. Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. on our own.
(AND IT IS AN EXCUSED ABSENCE) YOU JUST HAVE TO INFORM YOUR SCHOOL
Also to whomever thinks its just a day for a student to do nothing but sleep, play video games and do nothing, this unfortunately is the mentality of those making the decisions to keep students in school on a Federal recognized Holiday for an African American Freedom Fighter.WAKE UP!!!
