Safety Initiative Encourages Kids to Wear a Helmet, Win a Cone

Participating businesses are offering free ice cream to bike-, skateboard- and scooter-riding children whom police "catch" wearing a helmet.

The Fair Lawn Rotary Club, police department and area ice cream shops are teaming up to launch a program that encourages children to wear a helmet while riding their bike, skateboard or scooter.

The "Hooray for Helmets," initiative rewards children whom police "catch" wearing an approved helmet by awarding them with a gift certificate redeemable for a free ice cream at five area businesses.

Carvel, Haagen Dazs, Ice Cream Factoria, Yogurt Plus and the Glen Rock Baskin Robbins will all begin redeeming "Hooray for Helmets" gift certificates once school lets out for summer. Children must be accompanied by an adult when redeeming their reward.
