Singers to Mix Valentine's, President's Days for Show at Fair Lawn Nursing Home
Agape Road Show has performed more than 100 shows for seniors over the last four years
Volunteers are welcome to sing with Fair Lawn group Agape Road Show at Maple Glen Center—12-15 Saddle River Road—on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 2-3:30 p.m. Come uplift the nursing home residents with a Valentine's Day and President's Day program that includes sing-along group songs, jokes, skits and quizzes.
The performance will include an appearance by Abraham Lincoln as well as Agape's original character, “Miss Valentine.”
Agape Road Show has been performing for four years, with a total of over 100 shows at Maple Glen, the Veterans Home of Paramus, and Maywood Nursing Home, as well as two years at the Bergen Regional Medical Center’s nursing home and psychiatric hospital. The intergenerational 12-member group, which includes three children and an 89-year-old singer, also performs at the Morris County Nursing Home. A therapy dog joins the group for each performance.
“I like to say that we get as much love back from the residents as we give,” said Cornell Christianson, the group’s director.
Several of the all-volunteer group’s members sing for their church choirs. Each of Agape’s shows celebrates that month’s particular holiday, such as St. Patrick’s Day, Mothers Day, Independence Day, and other occasions, Christianson said.
But what about August, when there isn't a holiday of note? Agape sings in honor of National Clown Week. In September, since Labor Day is “too boring,” the group centers its show around National Dog Week, Christianson said.
Agape's shows include laughter contests with patients, animal sounds, and "monster sounds" during the October Halloween performance, Christianson said. In January, the group re-enacts New Year’s Eve with resolutions, toasts, and blowers.
All ages and levels of talent are welcome to join Agape. Call Cornell Christianson at 310-985-1024 or email at cornellchristianson@gmail.com. Or, just show up on Feb. 19.
