According to the Beatles Bible, "Come Together" came to be after John Lennon was inspired by Timothy Leary's gubernatorial campaign in California against Ronald Reagan. Leary's campaign, titled "Come together, join the party," ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana.
