In the relatively new world of electronic waste and information technology asset recovery, one Fair Lawn-based company is a pioneer. David Bernstein, Chief Executive Officer at AnythingIT on Zink Place, recalled that the Year 2000 Problem (also known as the Y2K bug) was "the birth of our industry." It was the first time that companies had to seriously inventory the computers they had, he said. AnythingIT, however, has been around since 1992. "It's really only a 10-year-old industry, even though we've been doing it a lot longer," Bernstein said. Working with both government and commercial …
The following press release was submitted by Fair Lawn's Green Team Advisory Committee: At the 2nd Annual Fair Lawn Green Fair on May 18, visitors will tour Fair Lawn High School’s courtyard, see its rain garden and participate in hands-on presentations to learn how easy it is to build beautiful, native plant rain gardens in their own yards or install a rain barrel. Master Gardeners of Bergen County will show residents how to create a pest and odor-free compost bin, or pile, and there will be many other educational and fun activities for families and children.  Pat LaRocco of Fair Lawn’s …
When it comes to following a green diet, there are several different aspects to consider. There’s your own health (and pocketbook), the ecological impact of growing and transporting food, and the waste generated from packaging. How does this translate to your own kitchen? We talked to local experts to tackle some frequently asked questions about green eating. What does it mean to eat organic? Officially, the USDA organic label means foods are produced without antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, irradiation or bioengineering. Why should I eat organic? “Eating organic foods reduce your exposure …
Though few homeowners may realize it, caring for our lawns can upset the delicate chemical balance of the environment. Fertilizer runoff can carry commonly used nutrients into local streams and waterways that can starve native fauna and flora of oxygen and give rise to invasive species. This is why eco-sensitive landscaping is so important. Now in effect, the New Jersey Fertilizer Law A2290 aims to protect all surface and ground waters from injury caused by nitrogen and phosphorus loads common to lawn fertilizers. The toughest fertilizer law in the nation, the NJ law pre-empts all local …
If remodeling is part of your spring cleaning plan, Bergen County experts are urging residents to give homes a green make-over.  "Going green doesn't mean going extreme," according to Susan Tenny Keefe, Decorating Den interior decorator. Keefe, a professional Green Designer, accredited by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, says “trying to retrofit a home to make it 100 percent green would inevitably end up contributing too much to the landfills. Most people want to decorate in an environmentally responsible way, but just aren't sure where to start.” Keefe insists that environmentally-…
Now that the snow has finally melted and it's starting to get warmer, it's important to start thinking about ways to care for your lawn and garden—in a sustainable way, while maintaining your lawn's health. Often times, people think that a bright green, healthy-looking lawn cannot coincide with ecologically-sound -- that is to say that chemicals are what give a lawn its healthy color and sustainable practices do not. As taken from a few lawn care experts in Bergen County, this is just a myth. Homeowners, you can have your cake and eat it too: be environmentally-conscious while keeping your …
Solar panels installed on the roof of the Bergen County Prosecutor's office building in Paramus will be able to generate more than enough electricity to power the building and save Bergen taxpayers money, Prosecutor John Molinelli said. And visitors can see exactly how much power the panels are generating with a monitor in the lobby. On a wintry day in January, the snow-covered panels weren't registering much of a blip, but even then the monitor reported that the panels had saved the equivalent of 375 gallons of gas since they went online in November. "Government should definitely be doing …
U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman (D-9)—a Fair Lawn resident—received a 100 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) on its 2010 National Environmental Scorecard this past Thursday. For 40 years, the National Environmental Scorecard issued by LCV has rated members of Congress on environmental, public health, and energy issues. “In the face of those who deny climate change or want to revoke the powers of the Environmental Protection Agency to protect human health and the environment, we must fight to improve the quality of our air, water, parks, and all public lands,” Rothman said in …
Community gardens are growing by leaps and bounds in towns all over the United States, and particularly right here in Bergen County. These are gardens open to residents of the community. All are welcome to grow their own produce, share ideas and learn about gardening, educate school children on nutrition and caring for the environment, donate back to the community and even share pot luck picnics and dinners.  This sounds great to have right in our own town. These are the goals for our own proposed Fair Lawn Community Garden, located at Sampson Park. The Fair Lawn Community Garden Committee …
