Cosgrove Dispels News Report; Won't Run for State Senate

Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove said there is no truth to a news report that he is on a shortlist of potential Republican State Senate candidates.

Fair Lawn Deputy Mayor John Cosgrove dismissed media speculation Thursday that he would challenge Sen. Bob Gordon in next year's New Jersey Senate race.  "I'm not going to seek nor will I accept that seat. I never even thought about it," said Cosgrove, responding to a Wednesday report on PolitickerNJ.com that tossed out his name as one of four Bergen County Republicans who might take on Gordon in 2013. "I've already called Bob and told him that I'm staying in Fair Lawn." Cosgrove, the lone Republican elected in Fair Lawn last year, said he had no idea why he'd been listed in the report and said his desire is to remain in Fair Lawn to serve out the entirety of his term. In addition to Cosgrove, PolitickerNJ listed former Freeholder John …

In Belated Results, Incumbent Cimiluca Ekes Out Council Re-election

On election night, margins had made the race too close to call. After provisional and absentee ballot tallying, Councilman Andrew Cimiluca maintained his seat by a single digit margin, but Omar Rodriguez is exploring his options.

Saddle Brook councilman Andrew Cimiluca will keep his seat for another four years, results certified Wednesday by the Bergen County Board of Elections confirmed. It had been clear the night of the election that Florence Mazzer and Joseph Camilleri would claim the first two of the seats up for grabs on the council, but a narrow margin between incumbent Cimiluca and challenger Omar Rodriguez for third place made the last open seat too close to call. As of November 6, Cimiluca had a lead of only 32 votes, with provisional and absentee ballots yet to be counted. Absentee voters had expected to be more numerous than in recent elections due to Hurricane Sandy. In provisional ballots, Rodriguez, a former council president and vocal critic since …

Christie: I Did Not Embrace Obama

'I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job.'

A day after President Barack Obama earned reelection, Governor Chris Christie dismissed critics who have accused him of bolstering the president during Obama's post-Sandy visit to New Jersey. “I wouldn't call what I did an embrace of Barack Obama," Christie said. "I'm a guy who tells the truth all the time and if the President of the United States did a good job, I’m going to say he did a good job." Speaking to reporters as Winter Storm Athena prepared to batter the already storm-shocked state, Christie was also quick to dismiss speculation of a 2016 presidential run, saying that the life and death issues inherent with back-to-back storms have made politics a minor focus for now. “I've got a job to do in New Jersey. My future, whatever it …

Democrats Regain Control of Freeholder Board

Incumbent Rob Hermansen and former River Edge mayor Margaret "Peg" Watkins have been defeated by Democrats Tracy Zur and Steve Tanelli.

Democrats were poised to gain control of the Bergen County Freeholder Board for the first time in two years, with Tracy Zur and Steve Tanelli leading their Republican opponents by more than 30,000 votes.  With 98.93 percent of ballots tallied, the Democratic pair overwhelmed Republican incumbent Robert Hermansen and running mate, Margaret "Peg" Watkins. Although several thousand ballots still need to be counted, the Republicans have conceded the race, northjersey.com reported. Unofficial data had Zur and Tanelli ahead by about 30,000 votes as of 11:43 p.m. Tanelli, a popular local councilman from North Arlington, checked in with 27.5 percent of the vote. His running mate, Zur, a former prosecutor and county judge from Franklin Lakes, took …

Mazzer, Camilleri, Cimiluca Finish Top 3 in Saddle Brook Council Race

Omar Rodriguez finished just 32 votes behind Cimiluca in another race that is too close to call.

Two incumbents and one challenger are the top vote-getters in Saddle Brook's race for three council seats with absentee ballots yet to be tallied, the municipal clerk's office confirmed late Tuesday night. Democratic incumbent Florence Mazzer (3,075 votes), a 12-year councilwoman, was the top vote-getter. Newcomer Joseph Camilleri, who replaced council member Joseph Setticase on the ballot less than two months before election day, finished second with 2,646 votes. Republican incumbent Andrew Cimiluca (2,572 votes) and Democratic challenger Omar Rodriguez (2,540) are separated by just 32 votes for the final council seat. There is no love lost between Cimiluca and Rodriguez, who have tussled throughout the campaign. During the candidate …

Garrett Defeats Teaneck Deputy Mayor in 5th District

Republican congressman wins sixth term

Republican Rep. Scott Garrett captured the redrawn 5th district Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Teaneck Deputy Mayor Adam Gussen, the Associated Press reports.   Restricting expanded Garrett's longtime Republican-leaning district to include Democratic strongholds of Hackensack and most of Teaneck. Despite being vastly out-fundraised, Gussen maintained the district was winnable with support from Bergen votes.  The two candidates presented starkly different platforms, but Garrett avoided confronting Gussen directly in the campaign. Instead, the Republican congressman's attacks focused on President Obama.  Gussen slammed Garrett for his conservative positions on women's health issues and opposition of the Affordable Care Act.  He …

I, and all of Sussex County, love Garrett's conservative positions on Congressional issues. He was one of the few congressmen who had the guts to vote for oversight of the New Orleans $50 Billion Katrina Debacle, which poured our taxpayer dollars to crooked politicos in LA. I'm a social liberal, atheist, and fiscal conservative who can support Scott Garrett without reservation.   more ›

Spindel, Banta and Klein Top Vote-Getters in Fair Lawn School Board Race

If the current numbers stand, two newcomers will join the Fair Lawn Board of Education next year.

One incumbent and two challengers received the most votes in a tight Fair Lawn Board of Education race with absentee ballots left to be counted, the municipal clerk's office confirmed late Tuesday night. Twenty-year board veteran Eugene Banta (3,277 votes) and newcomers Jeff Klein (2,987 votes) and Mark Spindel (2,689 votes) have received the most votes, but incumbent Ron Barbarulo (2,602 votes) is just 87 votes off the pace, making the race too close to call. In 2008, 973 absentee ballots and 83 provisional ballots were cast in Fair Lawn, but because of Superstorm Sandy, that number could be higher this time around. Challenger Vladimir Itkin (2,224 votes) and incumbent Josh Gillenson (1,712 votes) finished fifth and sixth, respectively…

Barack Obama Wins New Jersey

Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.

Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.

Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

Update: This article was updated at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 7 with quotes from Gov. Chris Christie. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." "The task of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you," Obama told supporters in his acceptance speech shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. "It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over war and depression. The spirit that has lifted …

Menendez Overtakes Kyrillos to Retain Senate Seat

Republicans have conceded the senatorial seat to incumbent Robert Menendez.

As the ballots pour in from Sandy-ravaged New Jersey, Robert Menendez has emerged victorious in reclaiming his U.S. Senate seat against Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos. With just over half of polling districts reporting, state Republicans have conceded victory to Menendez. The U.S. senator leads 58 percent to 40 percent as of 10:30 p.m., according to CBS News. "Senator Joe Kyrillos ran a great campaign against very tough circumstances and despite the loss, his family, campaign team, and supporters should be very proud of their efforts," New Jersey Republican Chairman Sam Raia said in a statement late Tuesday night. "Joe represents the very best of New Jersey and has fought for his constituents faithfully from the day he took office and …

While there are bad apples on both sides, at least Republicans do not mock purity, honor, and family values. Republicans are upset when their fellow Republicans fail to live up to those ideals. Democrats think it is all one big funny joke.   more ›
