Sasso Field Work Starting Next Week

The work was delayed because of rainy weather this spring.

A $600,000 project to renovate Fair Lawn High School's Sasso Field and install an artificial turf surface is slated to start next week, according to Board of Education President Michael Rosenberg.

The work was originally planned to start June 28, but one of the contractors working on the project was delayed on other work because of the rainy weather this spring. They are now expected to start the field work on Monday or Tuesday, Rosenberg said.

The work is still expected to be finished by the time schools open in September.

The field renovation had been a goal of the board for several years, but voters had twice turned down referendums to fund the project, so they had to save up for more than a decade since the first referendum. The new surface is expected to last at least 12 years.

Officials have said the artificial turf will open the field up to more students. Rosenberg estimated 25 percent of students would use it for extracurricular sports, and all will use it for physical education classes.

Sasso Field will be closed while the work is done.
