Fair Lawn Police Recertified For D.A.R.E.

Police will present the D.A.R.E. program to sixth-grade students this school year.

Seven Fair Lawn Police officers have been recertified to teach the D.A.R.E. program.

The program was cut from Fair Lawn schools in 2010 due to manpower issues, but is being reinstated for borough sixth-graders this year thanks to replenished numbers as a part of an effort to increase police presence in schools.

"We're giving everything back to the community," Capt. Robert Kneer said.

Interim Police Chief Glen Cauwels previously said the increased police presence would beef up school security, better prepare police in the event of an emergency and make students more at ease in officers' presence.

Bringing back the D.A.R.E. program could help put a stop to incidents like recent heroin arrests in the borough, he said.

Mayor John Cosgrove thanked the police for bringing back the program.

"We're excited D.A.R.E. will be back in our schools this year," he said.
