State Recognizes Fair Lawn For School Bus Safety

New Jersey has one of the most intensive school bus inspection programs in the country, according to the MVC.

State officials visited Fair Lawn Monday to point to the school district's buses as an example of safety while touting New Jersey's stringent bus inspection program.

Inspectors from the Motor Vehicle Commission check more than 180 items of every bus in a district's fleet twice a year and districts must also do inspections of individual vehicles every 3,000 miles, according to MVC Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond Martinez. State Police also perform surprise inspections to keep schools on their toes.

"We have one of the most intensive school bus safety inspection programs in the country," Martinez said.

Anyone who wants to check the results of their district's bus inspections can now view them on the MVC website here.

Martinez pointed to Fair Lawn's safety record as the reason they wanted to use the borough as an example.

"We focus on this throughout the entire school year," Superintendent Bruce Watson said.

Fair Lawn's school buses are maintained by borough mechanics through a shared service agreement.
