Abraham Feeds his Fuel-Hungry Flock of 'Israelites'

Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf Station, across from the Land and Sea Diner, has been fueling customers from all over the area since Wednesday evening

Frenzied fuel seekers have trekked from across the tri-state area for the past 24 hours area to fill up on the petrol manna being pumped around the clock at the Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf Station.

Owner  Bob Abraham, whose line of customers stretches more than a mile down Pollitt Drive to Route 208 North (where it’s backing up traffic), said he’s serviced gas guzzlers from Pennsylvania to upstate New York and everywhere in between.

Abraham owes his pumping prominence to Morlot Avenue resident and fuel savior  Israel Sabo, who offered the station – which had been without power since Monday morning -- use of his two generators. Sabo, who gets his car serviced by Abraham at the Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf station, stopped by around 6 p.m. Wednesday to fill up his car when he learned the station had been without power for two days.

“They had gas, but not power,” said Sabo, who generously offered to zip home and pick up his two spare generators to power the gas station’s pumps.

Abraham, who never lost faith he'd reopen and was at home pondering power alternatives, jumped at the opportunity offered by Sabo and came in to work.

By 6:30 p.m., the pumps at Fair Lawn Avenue Gulf were flowing.

Before long, word spread that the station was open for business and "Israelites" began calling Abraham to confirm the ‘good news,’ before making the pilgrimage. The station filled up customers with the petrol spirit late into the night, before closing briefly at 3 a.m. By 5 a.m. a long line began forming again and the station re-opened at 6:30 a.m. and has been going strong since.

Abraham, who’s capping his $3.55 per gallon gas at $40 per person, said he expected it would last until about noon Thursday. Even after he runs out of gas, however, his fuel disciples needn’t lose faith. The second coming is scheduled for Thursday evening when he’ll be receiving a partial load of petrol from New Haven, Conn.
