Fair Lawn Plans Monday Trunk-or-Treat at Middle Schools

Due to safety concerns, the borough will reschedule Halloween as a trunk-or-treat event, rather than a door-to-door affair throughout town.

Fair Lawn will hold a parking lot "trunk-or-treat" at Thomas Jefferson and Memorial Middle Schools on Monday evening.

The decision to hold a trunk-or-treat, in which children dress up and collect candy from the trunks of parked cars, was undertaken to avoid the possible risks kids could face navigating the borough's dozens of downed wires and toppled trees while trick-or-treating door-to-door, Fair Lawn Board of Education president Michael Rosenberg said.

Cars are asked to arrive between 5 p.m. and 5:30pm, and the trunk-or-treat will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

School Closings and Updates

Roseberg said he and superintendent of schools Bruce Watson have been attending daily meetings with the borough to coordinate school closing efforts and ensure students don't return to class before their safety can be assured.

Classes are cancelled for the remainder of this week in both Fair Lawn and Saddle Brook, and are still up in the air for next week in Fair Lawn, Rosenberg said. Both Edison and Radburn Schools are still without power and Rosenberg said he's not confident they'll have it restored any time soon.

Fair Lawn High School will again operate as a charging station Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for residents without power. A few dozen residents stopped by Thursday to warm up and recharge electrical devices at both the high school and the community center, whose charging center hours are 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m on Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Testing for the SATs, which had been scheduled at the high school for Saturday, has been postponed until Nov. 17, Rosenberg said.

The boro of Fair lawn called with a message about this (and other FL updates) and they mentioned the specific times. However, I got momentarily distracted and didn't hear them. Where can we find transcripts of the messages the boro sends out via phone?

The message said from 5-7 PM.

Since there are only two days of school next week they should just cancel them.

Correction: the message said the cars should get there between 5:00 & 5:30, and the kids go from 5:30-7:30, as this article states.

Thanks! The previous version of this article that I read had stated that the times were still being determined. I see that it has now been updated with the correct times.

Can someone please have this information added to the Emergency phone message notifications? I didn't know about this, neither do a lot of others who don't read The Patch! Last year, Glen Rock cancelled due to storm, but Fair Lawn didn't and we saw 500 kids on our block in Radburn. I had a tree branch suspended on my power line, taped off my house with Caution tape, and kids thought it was part of Halloween decorations, which is understandable... Fair Lawn has cancelled door-to door, but who got the message? Please include this information in the emergency phone notifications, too many people are unaware if they don't read The Patch.

Ugh. What a nightmare. I have to work on Monday. (Not everyone in town has a family member that works for the school and gets out at 3-4 pm!) I guess we will just show up when we can and hope our neighbors will forgive us for not having a car there to distribute candy.

It went out in the email notifications.

Just want to thank Sunrise Rotary for taking the lead along with the Borough to let the kids have Halloween in Fair Lawn! We may have been dealt a serious blow last week, but this just shows you how resourceful the people of Fair Lawn are. Please let all your friends that have children know about this event. As for the adults pile some candy in your trunk and go to one of middle schools. It will put a smile on your face as well as children of Fair Lawn. All the information in this articlle is still correct as far as times and the 2 Middle Schools. Look forward to seeing you at the Trunk-or-Treat!!!

thanks we will be there! My son is Spider man and my daughter is Angry Bird. Glad it is after work as well, 5:30 is a great starting time. And 7 is a nice ending time too.

And if you can't get your car in early enough for the 5-5:30 time and you have candy to hand out ...park near the school and walk in with a bowl to hand out..I'm sure it would be much appreciated...If there are only a lot of people going in to get candy and not give out then everyone will run out pretty quickly.
