Fair Lawn resident, Patch contributor and rank-order specialist Cornell Christianson initiated a "Most Beatiful House in Fair Lawn" contest in July. Readers voted for one of 10 houses that had been selected by a panel of 18 experts that included architects, historians, realtors, teachers, senior citizens, and some teenagers and children.

The Fair Lawn Board of Education in February voted to disenroll a high school student who was found to no longer be living within the district.

A Fair Lawn mother sued the producer of an instructional breastfeeding video she appeared in with her infant daughter after the video was posted to YouTube and spliced into a pornographic film by a third party.

7. Resident Killed in Fair Lawn Train Strike

In July, a Fair Lawn woman was fatally struck by an NJ Transit train, about 400 feet west of the Broadway-Fair Lawn Station. An NJ Transit spokeswoman said the woman, identified as Yelena Gorovits, made no attempt to clear the tracks as the train approached.

A 27-year-old Clifton High School teacher who grew up in Fair Lawn was indicted in September on sexual assault charges stemming from two sexual encounters she allegedly had this April with one of her male students.

4. Mother Pleads Not Guilty in Runaway Minivan Case

A Fair Lawn woman who was charged with child endangerment in May after her unattended minivan carrying her two infant children rolled backwards out of its parking spot at the Radburn CVS and into parking lot traffic, pleaded not guilty in municipal court.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker told an audience of about 200 partisans at a Fair Lawn Democratic County Committee event at the Fair Lawn Community Center in late July that he was strongly considering a run at higher office when his term expires in 2014. 

2. Hasbrouck Heights Man Charged in Fatal Route 208 Crash

A 22-year-old Hasbrouck Heights man was charged with vehicular homicide in late March after his passenger died in an early morning crash on Route 208 near the Fair Lawn Avenue exit. Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said the driver, Lukisz Skibicki, was drunk when he failed to negotiate a bend in the road and crashed into a tree, killing his passenger, 24-year-old George Kantakis.

An elderly Hillside Terrace resident suffered serious injuries when a giant oak tree was ripped from the ground during Superstorm Sandy and fell crashing into her house and right on top of her, pinning her underneath.
