5 Things Friday: High School Basketball Opening Night Fundraiser

1) The  opens its season Friday against Ramapo at home, and will be looking to avenge an embarrassing defeat they suffered at the hands of the Raiders on opening night last year. 

The game itself will be secondary to the return of the night's honoree - freshman guard Keyla Martinez. Martinez fell seriously ill during a team workout just before Thanksgiving and had to be rushed to the hospital, where she stayed for 21 days. She was recently released and will be attending the game with her parents, as a fan.

The sale of t-shirts, concessions and proceeds from a raffle during the game will be donated to the Martinez family for Keyla's medical bills. Students won’t be charged admission to attend the game, but donations will be accepted.

2) Nine cognitively impaired students from the 's Bridges II program will debut a music video filmed on location at the high school for their music class this semester under the direction of music teacher John Giresi.

3) Enjoy a  Friday. The Ciccone Theatre will be hosting the Bergen Sinfonia Orchestra, under the direction of renowned conductor, Murray Colosimo. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. and is $10.

4)  Friday at the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, located at 6 South Monroe St. The Chorale will be performing in collaboration with The Newark Boys Chorus. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Please visit the website for more information.

5) The Cultural Outreach Department at Gilda’s Club of Northern New Jersey invites all for a  on Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 575 Main St. in Hackensack. The event is free.
