Mom Talk: Father’s Day 'Not About a Gender'

On Sunday, June 19, we are reminded to pay tribute to the special father figures in our lives! Do you remember going fishing with your dad or uncle? Or as a child sitting with your  step father while he reads a book to you? Or going to a Yankee game with your cousins? Or being invited to a special breakfast with your grandfather? These are just a few of the divine moments in our lives which we treasure and carry deep in our hearts.

Our father figures are men who guide us throughout our lives. They quietly see the special gifts that we bring to the world and somehow know how to help us evolve. They work to put a meal on our tables and roofs over our heads. How about the brave woman who heroically must be wear both hats in her family? Father’s Day is not about a gender, but what the father figure represents. Strength, stability, compassion, fun, dedication and that unconditional love which come from their souls.

The life lessons that my father, who is a soft angelic distinguished man, has imparted to me are my backbone. Every month, when we write our rent check, I slip a small hand-written note into the envelope affirming, “Thank you for being my daddy.” A moving and very heartwarming song I perform, in my “Seeds of Love” Concert is called Landslide, originally performed by the one and only Stevie Nicks:

I always dedicate this vocal to my dad because it speaks of the inner knowing that I must let go, with the stable awareness that he is not going away. My dad is holding on to the kite string, allowing me to soar and fly, as the winds of life take me on a journey. Once in awhile, Looking down to see him.Knowing that if something goes wrong he will always catching me if I fall! Dust me off and help me to mend my wings and fly once again.  

Every June, as he sits rocking on his front poach, we ask him what would you like for Father’s Day. His response: “Peace, no arguing, get along with one another and enjoy your life.”

Take a few minutes and find that extraordinary gift that you would like share on Father’s Fay or every day. Possibly you too could share the gift of peace and pure love with your father or father figure as we honor my dad’s requests.
