Blotter: Theft at Retro Fitness, Shoplifting at ShopRite

A patron of told Fair Lawn police that someone took his cell phone from his jacket pocket while he was working out on Feb. 9, according to a police report.

Officer Kenneth Cavanagh responded to the Pollitt Drive gym at 9:26 p.m. that night, police said. The jacket was left hanging on a hook unattended during the workout, the report said.

On Feb. 7 at 8:46 p.m., Officer Tom Check responded to the area of Morlot Avenue and 15th Street for a car stuck on an embankment of snow, and found driver Andrew Stewart, 55, of Fair Lawn, standing next to a Ford sedan, police said. The car was damaged from striking the snow embankment, and according to Stewart, he was driving on Morlot Ave when he lost control of his vehicle and slid on a patch of ice, the police report said. While investigating the accident, Officer Check determined that Stewart was under the influence; Stewart was then arrested and charged with DWI and careless driving, police said.

On Feb. 6 at 8:13 p.m., Officer Robert Belbol responded to the supermarket on River Road for a report of shoplifting, a police report said. According to store security, Shakeena Blacknell, 29, of Saddle Brook, was seen hiding several packages of cold cuts under her clothing before leaving the store, police said. Blacknell was then arrested and transported to police headquarters, where it was learned that there were active arrest warrants for her; she was charged with shoplifting and is scheduled to appear in Fair Lawn Municipal Court on Wednesday at 7 p.m., police said. Blacknell was later released after posting bail for the active arrest warrants, according to the report.

On Feb. 6 at 2:52 a.m., Officer Robert Manning observed a Plymouth mini van pass him at a high rate of speed on Broadway near 26th Street, according to a police report. The Plymouth continued driving at a high speed while failing to stop for the red traffic lights at 26th Street and Plaza Road; during the traffic stop, Manning determined that the driver, Kimberly Toro, 23, of Paterson, was intoxicated, police said. Manning also discovered that the Plymouth was missing a front tire and was riding on the rim, the report said. Toro was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended driver’s license, failure to observe a traffic signal, and careless driving, police said. She is scheduled to appear in Fair Lawn Municipal Court on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

While investigating a motor vehicle accident on Feb. 4 at 1:05 p.m., Officer Eric Eleshewich discovered that one of the drivers, Freddy Angulo, 30, of Spring Valley, N.Y., had active arrest warrants, a police report said. Angulo was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was later released to the custody of the Paterson Police Department, police said.
