Burglar Strikes Saddle Brook Home

The burglar made off with a jewelry box, according to police.

Saddle Brook Police are searching for a burglar who broke into a Steinway Road home Wednesday.

Police responded to a call of an activated burglar alarm and found a side door of the house ajar, according to Deputy Chief Robert White. A screen door window had been removed and a glass panel in the interior door had been smashed in.

Officers searched the home, but the burglar had apparently already escaped. The only item reported missing by the homeowner was a jewelry box, according to White.

"This burglary is classified as a smash and grab in that burglar used the elements of speed and surprise," White said in a press release. "In this particular case the burglar smashed the side door, grabbed the most valuable item, which was the jewelry box from the master bedroom, and quickly exited the house without concern for setting off the alarm or creating noise."

Police are continuing to investigate the incident. White asked that anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious contact Det. Sgt. Thomas Johnson at (201) 587-2940.
