Emergency Officials Urge Residents to Prepare For Hurricane Season

A "very active" hurricane season is predicted for this year.

Meteorologists have predicted a "very active" hurricane season this year with as many as nine hurricanes and other named storms likely to occur in the Atlantic Ocean, and local officials are urging residents to be prepared.

According to Fair Lawn Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Wendy Demeraski, residents should take the following steps to prepare for storms:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan
  • Register for notifications from the Borough at “Notification Sign-Up” on the borough's website
  • Make plans to secure your property
  • Prepare a “Go Kit” in case of evacuations
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts
  • Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down
  • Install a generator for emergencies
  • Have cash on hand as ATMs may not be available
"Go kits" should be ready with a five-day supply medication and other essentials in case evacuations are required, according to Demeraski. They should be prepared in advance because there may not be time to search for items during a storm.

Residents with generators should be sure they are used outside, away from doors, windows or vents. The exhaust can cause carbon monoxide to build up if used indoors.
