Man Urinated, Smeared Blood in Cell After Assaulting Cop, Officials Say

Evgeni Yampolski, of Fair Lawn, allegedly attacked a Bergen County police officer.

A Fair Lawn man assaulted a Bergen County police officer and then urinated and smeared blood on the walls of his jail cell Thursday, according to Jeanne Baratta, the county executive's chief of staff.

The incident started when county police officer Christopher Sullivan tried to pull over 31-year-old Evgeni Yampolski in Paramus, Baratta said. Yampolski was allegedly intoxicated and refused to stop, leading Sullivan back to his Fair Lawn Avenue home.

When they stopped, Yampolski attacked Sullivan, according to Baratta. More officers from the Fair Lawn and Bergen County police arrived and they were able to subdue him, she said.

Sullivan was treated for minor injuries at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Yampolski was brought to Bergen County Jail, but "he became violent in the back of the police car," causing some damage, Baratta said. His violent behavior allegedly continued at the jail.

"He urinated and was very volatile," Baratta said. "He smeared blood all over the cell."

Yampolski is a Russian-born Israeli citizen, according to Baratta. Officials were still investigating whether or not he was in the U.S. legally, she said.

Yampolski was charged with eluding a police officer, driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault of a police officer, criminal mischief and issued several motor vehicle summonses, with additional charges possible. As of Friday morning, Yampolski was still being held in Bergen County Jail on $35,000 bail, Baratta said.
