Man Arrested After Allegedly Shooting Up in Saddle Brook Marriott

Police said they found a total of 36 bags of heroin on the suspect.

Saddle Brook Police arrested a man who allegedly had 36 bags of heroin after a Marriott Hotel employee reported the suspect may have used the drug in a lobby bathroom Wednesday.

The hotel's assistant manager reported seeing the suspect drop an orange syringe cap on the floor in one of the men's room stalls and called police at 1:52 p.m., according to Saddle Brook Police Deputy Chief Robert White.

Detective Captain Vincent Laurentino and Officer Christopher Stanton responded to the hotel, where staff pointed them in the direction of a car the man had gotten into in the parking lot. Police followed the car onto the Garden State Parkway before pulling the suspect over.

Police arrested the man after allegedly finding six bags of heroin on the car's driver, 26-year-old Hackensack resident Matthew Duthie, and 30 bags of heroin on a passenger in the car. Both men allegedly also had hypodermic needles.

"The quantity of heroin found on the suspects would seem to indicate that these suspects are either desperately addicted to this dangerous substance or they intended to distribute it to others," Police Chief Robert Kugler said.

Duthie was charged with possession of heroin, possession of hypodermic needles and possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance paraphernalia. The man was released on his own recognizance and are due in Saddle Brook Municipal Court next week.
