Fair Lawn Man Struck, Killed by Train [UPDATE]

Stephen Van Kirk was hit by a train near Glen Rock Thursday morning.

A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a train near Hazelhurst Avenue Thursday morning.

The man, 59-year-old Fair Lawn resident Stephen Van Kirk, apparently positioned himself in front of the train on the tracks between the Radburn Station and the border with Glen Rock at about 7 a.m., according to NJ Transit spokesperson Courtney Carroll.

The Hoboken-bound train had 375 passengers onboard at the time of the incident. There were no other injuries, Carroll said.

Train service was suspended in both directions on the Bergen County Line for about an hour after the accident, according to Carroll. Service had been restored with delays of 10 to 15 minutes.

NJ Transit Police are continuing to investigate the incident, Carroll said.

Another Bergen County man was killed earlier Thursday after he was struck by a train in Westwood.
