Deliveryman Accused of Selling Booze to Minor, Works at Deli Targeted by Robbers

Li Yunchuan, a delivery driver for a Garfield deli, sold rum to an underage girl, according to Saddle Brook police.

A 54-year-old delivery driver was arrested Wednesday evening after he allegedly sold a bottle of rum a to an underage girl, according to Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler.

Li Yunchuan, a delivery driver for Nice Food Restaurant of Garfield, brought the bottle of Bacardi dragon berry rum to Finnigan Avenue after the order was made at 9:06 p.m. Wednesday, according to Kugler. Yunchuan then sold the booze to an underage girl, who paid cash, without checking her ID, Kugler said.

Another delivery driver from the same deli was the victim of an attempted robbery in Saddle Brook last August when a trio of teens allegedly tried to use fake money to buy alcohol and soda from him.

Police were "concerned about the ability of persons to order and buy alcohol by mobile delivery service in our community," Deputy Police Chief Robert White said in August.

Nice Food has a liquor license, but state law requires the actual sale of alcohol to take place at the business, either in person or with a credit card over the phone, according to Kugler.

"And, most importantly, you can't sell and in anyway provide it to underage persons," Kugler said.

Yunchuan was charged with offering an alcoholic beverage to an underage person. He was released on his own recognizance. Police also reported Nice Food to Garfield authorities and the New Jersey Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
