Woman Killed After Bus, Van Collide on GSP [UPDATE]

At least three people suffered serious injuries from the accident.

One person was killed and at least two others were seriously injured when a van they were riding in collided with a NJ Transit bus on the Garden State Parkway in Saddle Brook Tuesday night, according to New Jersey State Police Lt. Stephen Jones.

Police identified the woman killed as Velma Castro, but did not immediately have her age or town of residence available. Further information about the condition of the other victims was also not immediately available.

The van may have been carrying as many as 23 people at the time of the accident, Jones said.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident and the driver was apparently not injured, according to Sgt. Brian Polite.

The accident occurred in the southbound side near mile marker 160.2 at about 7:30 p.m., Polite said.

Southbound traffic was being diverted off the Parkway at Exit 159 due to the accident.
