Thieves Targeting Sheds, Police Warn

There were five thefts and shed break-ins from backyards in Saddle Brook near Fair Lawn this week.

Saddle Brook Police cautioned residents to secure their property after a string of five reported thefts and break-ins from township backyards this week.

A thief apparently broke into unlocked sheds in four of the incidents, according to Deputy Police Chief Robert White. Three of the incidents happened on Colonial Avenue late Wednesday or early Thursday, another was one on Cambridge Avenue in the same time period and another happened on Oak Street Tuesday morning.

The victim on Oak Street reported seeing someone in her backyard at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, White said.

The thief didn't get away with much. The only items reported missing include two padlocks, tow extension cords and a ride-on lawnmower battery, according to White. Nothing was taken from two of the sheds.

Police are advising residents to take extra precautions locking doors and windows. They also suggested using extra security measures like lighting, security cameras and alarms.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Chief Robert White at 201-587-2929 or Detective Captain Vincent Laurentino at 201-587-2920.
