Trio Used Bogus Prescriptions to Buy Painkillers, Police Say

The men allegedly tried to purchase oxycodone and cough syrup with codeine at a Fair Lawn pharmacy after successfully buying drugs in Elmwood Park with the fake prescriptions.

Fair Lawn police arrested three men Thursday night who allegedly purchased painkillers using fake prescription slips, according to Sgt. Brian Metzler.

Devonte Hayes, 21, and Aaron Carter, 20, both of Newark, and Janai Travers, 18, of Irvington, tried to use "a manufactured and forged prescription slip" to buy oxycodone and cough syrup with codeine at the River Road CVS, according to Metzler.

Detective Paul Donohue, Detective Peter Yuskaitis and Detective Sgt. Tim O’Shaughnessy found the men in the store's parking lot. The detectives also allegedly discovered more bogus prescription slips, 87 oxycodone pills, two 8-ounce bottles of cough syrup with codeine and marijuana in the men's car. The pills and cough syrup were bought earlier that day at pharmacies in Elmwood Park using the fake prescription slips, according to Metzler.

All three men were charged with conspiracy to obtain a controlled dangerous substance by fraud. Carter and Travers were charged with two counts of forgery each and Travers was also charged with distributions of a controlled dangerous substance and three counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Bail was set at $25,000 each and all three were sent to Bergen County Jail.
