'Very Serious Accident' on I-80 Leaves Man in Critical Condition

One of six people injured in the accident was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center.

One man was critically injured in a "very serious accident" on I-80 eastbound in Saddle Brook Monday afternoon, according to State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams.

A box truck driven by Rudy Martinez, of Mahwah, lost control and struck the curb, concrete barrier and a concrete pillar under the Mayhill Street overpass at 2:56 p.m., according to Sgt. Adam Grossman. As the truck was crashing, it was struck from behind by a minivan driven by Guartamber Fausto. The minivan ended up partially underneath the truck.

The truck and the minivan had two passengers each. All six people were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Martinez was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center via medevac helicopter. He was still listed as being in critical condition Monday evening, Grossman said.

There were heavy traffic delays in the area as emergency workers cleared the vehicles, which were blocking two eastbound lanes.

Police remained at the scene for several hours and the incident was still under investigation Monday evening, though the road was cleared.
