Borough Hunts for New Emergency Management Coordinator

With the impending retirement of current Emergency Management Coordinator Ira Marks, the borough has opened up its search for a new OEM coordinator.

Fair Lawn is seeking a replacement for emergency management coordinator Ira Marks, who is retiring at the end of the year.

The part-time position, which pays $25,000 per year, involves maintaining the borough's emergency operations center, developing and organizing the borough's emergency operations plan and conducting regular exercises to test the borough's emergency operations plan, among many other things.

Borough manager Tom Metzler, who served as the borough's emergency management coordinator prior to Marks, said that other than a few basic responsibilities, the new coordinator will be free to take emergency managment in the direction he or she sees fit.

Applicants for the three-year appointment must be Fair Lawn residents and are required to have at least two years of experience planning, developing and administering emergency response activities in the public or private sector, or in the military.

Metzler said all applications must be into the borough by Oct. 1 and that he expects to name a new OEM coordinator by Oct. 15. The new OEM coordinator will work with Marks for the remainder of the year to ease the transition process so they will be prepared to take over the department at the beginning of 2013.

To apply, send your resume to:

Thomas Metzler, CEM

Interesting point, assuming he was making $25k, he complained $140k wasn't enough since he was "promised" $150k? I'd love to hear Tom address this.

@MJM - The job was full-time when Metzler vacated the position (although he started as an unpaid volunteer). It has been part-time since Ira Marks took over. So you can't really compare their salaries.

Tom started as an "unpaid volunteer" and has parlayed it into an "unqualified Manager". The line filing applications must be long. Look at the opportunity to make a ton of money. Lets just say its UN-believable.

History would show thousands of dollars were extracted from Chief Roses police budget years ago for the then past OEM director salary which was increased dramatically, can you guess for who? Bingo Tom Metzler! Funny how these relationships meld! Now OEM is a sideshow at the taxpayers loss! Sorry for Ira Marks, he was a true caring gentleman!
