Fair Lawn Purchasing Lightning Detection System

The system will sound alerts of possible lightning strikes at three borough field complexes.

Fair Lawn is planning to add a new lightning detection system to three borough field complexes.

The borough council voted to approve a $2.2 million bond ordinance appropriating funds for numerous projects during their last meeting, including the lightning detection system via a $414,400 appropriation for improvements to several borough-owned facilities.

The systems have been a popular item among area towns recently. They sound an alert when lightning strikes within a certain distance of the fields, alerting anyone using them to the risk of a strike there.

"It's something that I think is very necessary," Councilwoman Lisa Swain said.

The included locations where lightning detection systems will be installed include the Dobrow Sports Complex, the Center Recreation Field behind the high school and the Memorial School soccer field, according to Acting Borough Manager Jim Van Kruiningen.
