Right on Red Banned at Saddle River Rd., Fair Lawn Ave.

The Fair Lawn Council approved an ordinance prohibiting right on red turns at the intersection in an effort to improve pedestrian safety.

Fair Lawn officials banned right on red turns at an intersection where several pedestrians have been hit by cars in recent years.

The borough council approved last week the ordinance banning right on red turns at the intersection of Saddle River Road with Fair Lawn Avenue and Dunkerhook Road, where there are three bus stops, a temple and a bike path.

The signs will go up as soon as they receive the go-ahead from county officials, according to Mayor John Cosgrove.

Sam Racenstein, whose wife was hit by a car at the intersection last year and is still recovering, called it "a good step."

"This is a first step, a building block... to see what we can do to stop people from getting hit at that intersection," he said.

The council also previously passed a resolution "urging Bergen County to make improvements at the intersection of Saddle River Road and Fair Lawn Avenue" because they are county roads.

Deputy Mayor Ed Trawinski, who is also the Bergen County administrator, said the county is working to address safety issues at the intersection, but there is an issue with a sliver of protected Green Acres park land which requires state approval for their planned project.

"It's very much underway, but will take some time," he said.
