FLHS Marching Band Concludes Another Award-Winning Season

The Fair Lawn High School Marching Band finished among the top high school marching bands in the state and country at the State and National competitions earlier this month.

The Fair Lawn High School Marching Band, among the state's most decorated performing ensembles, concluded yet another extraordinary season earlier this month.

The marching band, which competes in Open Class Group IV, finished second overall, and took best percussion and the "Award of Excellence" for high general effect and creativity at the USBands State Championships on Nov. 10. The Cutters followed that up the next day with a fourth overall finish -- second in both music and percussion -- at USBands Nationals.

Band director Paul Kafer said it was the band’s highest finish and score at Nationals since 2006.

“I am particularly proud of how hard the kids worked individually after the hurricane,” Kafer said in a statement. “They overcame difficult times with their family, neighbors, and friends, and continually communicated, sharing ideas on how to improve in preparation for [the competitions]."

In addition to their strong showing at States and Nationals -- where Fair Lawn was once again the only Bergen County band to compete in the Open Class division -- the Cutters also won all six of their local shows this year.
