Volunteering in Our Community

Volunteers provide a valuable service to our local community.  As a volunteer in Fair Lawn, I urge everyone to look for ways to help our neighbors in any capacity possible.  Spend time at Fair Lawn’s food pantry, visit the elderly that don’t have families at a local nursing home, help raise funds for a worthy cause, donate your time to a charity.

There are many volunteer organizations in our community; some are under the auspices of our local government, many more are not.  I would certainty miss more than one if I started listing these organizations that provide many wonderful services to Fair Lawn and I don’t want to offend any organization.  Each organization serves our community in a special way.  I joined The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn because of its history in Fair Lawn and the many projects and services it provides for all of us.

By becoming a member of The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn, you will be a part of what makes Fair Lawn the wonderful place it is to live.  You can and will help shape your community; you can bring ideas to the Club that you feel will help those in need right here in our community.

As a Rotarian, you will be part of one of the oldest service organizations in the world.  Rotary was started in 19005 by four men seeking to establish where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.  Rotarians have not only been present for major events in history—we’ve been a part of them. From the beginning, three key traits have remained strong throughout Rotary:

            - Rotary is truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today we’re working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.

            - We persevere in tough times. During WWII, Rotary clubs in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Japan were forced to disband. Despite the risks, many continued to meet informally and following the war’s end, Rotary members joined together to rebuild their clubs and their countries.

            - Rotary’s commitment to service is ongoing. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic—down from 125 in 1988.

As a Fair Lawn Rotarian, you will help those I need around the corner and across the globe.  We urge you to learn more about Rotary in Fair Lawn and in our global community.  Please visit us at one of our weekly Thursday meetings for lunch at the Fair Lawn Athletic Club on Parmelee Ave., or visit our website at www.clubrunner.ca/fairlawn.  To learn more about Rotary International, visit www.rotary.org.
