The Building Department – located on the second floor of the municipal building in room 216 – issues building and zoning permits for home improvements. Building permits are required for improvements such as roofing, siding, water heaters and outdoor pools. Zoning permits are needed for additions like decks, fences and patios.

When contacted, the department determines if permits are necessary and explains what documentation must be submitted for applications. Applications for certificates of occupancy (required by Fair Lawn for re-sales of homes and condos) and the services of a property maintenance inspector are also available through the department.
