Every municipality and county in New Jersey is required to have an emergency operations plan -- including planning, response, recovery, and mitigation phases -- and an emergency management coordinator. Fair Lawn's coordinator is Ira Marks.

The office operates Fair Lawn's siren system, which includes six radio activated speaker towers throughout the borough. Since 2002, Fair Lawn has also had an emergency telephone alerting system which can provide as many as 15,000 notifications per hour to residents. The emergency management office also has a special needs registry to help residents with physical or mental disabilities deal with emergencies.
