Cutters' Bats Silenced in County Softball Tournament Quarterfinals

Fair Lawn lost 5-0 to Immaculate Conception Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Bergen County Softball Tournament.

Fair Lawn's county softball tournament run came to an end in the quarterfinals Saturday at the hands of Immaculate Conception. The Cutters managed only three hits and failed to scratch out a run against freshman pitcher Sarah Piening, whose Blue Wolves won 5-0 to advance to the tournament's Final Four. Fair Lawn trailed only 1-0 through four innings, but Immaculate Conception rallied for two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach. The Saddle Brook Board of Education Monday approved the hiring of Dr. Richard Katz as its new superintendent of schools. Fair Lawn borough council adopted a $46.8 million municipal budget Tuesday that will increase taxes $32 on the average assessed homeowner. Fair Lawn High School dropped a couple hundred spots, but still ranked 876th nationally in Newsweek's 2013 list of "America's Best High Schools." Give a Shrub, Take a Shrub at Sunday Plant Swap

The Fair Lawn Garden Committee is sponsoring a plant swap event on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Recycling Center on Saddle River Road.

Residents and non-residents keen on expanding their garden without breaking the bank are invited to attend a Sunday Plant Swap at the Fair Lawn Recycling Center on Saddle River Road. The Garden Committee is sponsoring the swap, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting, in the Nick Felice parking lot at the recycling center.  Green thumbs are asked to bring plants they'd be willing to swap one-for-one. An assortment of perennials, herbs and houseplants will also be sold for $2 and up, cash only. Proceeds go to "greening" Fair Lawn. New Jersey Ranks Third in %&!#@ing Survey

Swearing study ranked the most and least courteous states in the country.

Third place? We couldn’t do better than #&@$ing third place? New Jersey residents were beaten out by Ohio and Maryland in a survey ranking individuals most likely to drop swear words on a complete stranger during a phone conversation. On the flip side, analysis by the Marchex Institute found that Washington, Massachusetts and Arizona topped the list of state residents least likely to lose their cool. Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries. The mobile advertising company also ranked the most courteous states: South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland. And the least courteous states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Indiana. Junior League of Bergen County Offers Touch-A-Truck Fundraiser

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19th.

The Junior League of Bergen County is offering a touch-a-truck fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19. The event will take place at the parking lot in the Garden State Plaza in Paramus. Tickets are $20 for a family of four if purchased in advance or $25 the day of the event. Additional family members are $5 each. Tickets can be purchased on the Junior League of Bergen County website. Proceeds from the event support the Junior League of Bergen's County mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and im[proving the community through action and leadership of trained volunteers. After Major Trauma, Rescued Dog Almost Ready for Adoption

Ford was not expected to survive after being hit by car but he's making full recovery.

Ford is one lucky pooch. Just a few months ago the brown and white pit bull was brought to the Bergen County Animal Shelter in bad shape — partially frozen, with a broken hip and pelvis. Thanks to much love and care he's making a full recovery and will soon be eligible for adoption. Ford had been found clinging to life on Route 280 in late January near Kearny by a state police officer. It's believed he had been hit by a car, says Deborah Yankow of the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro. "We weren't sure he was going to make it," says Yankow. The young dog, which the shelter named Ford, was very sick and couldn't even walk. The shelter's medical staff began caring for him he has turned out to be a great dog, she says. The shelter …

FLHS Marathon Fun Run/Walk on for Saturday Morning

The 2nd Annual Fun Run/Walk, a relatively new aspect of the historic Fair Lawn High School Marathon, will be held Saturday morning.

Marathon 2013 kicked off Friday afternoon at the high school, but it's not too late to register for Saturday morning's 2nd Annual Marathon Fun Run/Walk. The approximately 3-mile event begins at 9 a.m at the high school, with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. in the high school parking lot. The cost to participate is $10 for the general public and $5 for students, seniors and Board of Education employees. Marathon, one of the high school's longest running traditions, is a senior-class planned two-day extravaganza of games, music, food and fun that raises money for local charities and organizations. Route 208 Ramp Repaving Begins

For the next week, overnight paving will occur for all Route 208 South entrance and exit ramps in Fair Lawn.

A week of overnight paving will begin Friday on all Route 208 South entrance and exit ramps in Fair Lawn. According to a Fair Lawn Emergency Management notification, milling and paving will occur between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. from May 17 through May 24. The paving will begin Friday night on Elm Avenue, near the Route 208 South exit and entrance ramps to Maple Avenue.
