County executive's former campaign manager offers free public relations help to Bergen Community College.

The decision by Alan Marcus and The Marcus Group to withdraw their $90,000 contract with Bergen Community College was the appropriate course of action given the County Executive’s past practice of weeding out unnecessary and wasteful spending. However the decision by Mr. Marcus to offer “free” consultation services regarding upcoming labor negotiations is equally disturbing. When does a public agency or in this case a county school board take collective bargaining tips from a public relations executive? Doesn’t Bergen Community College have on retainer legal counsel to handle such matters? The withdrawal of this contract does not cause harm to the institution as suggested, but it saves taxpayers $90,000 on something that wasn’t needed or …

Upon learning it had the county's blessing Tuesday, borough council agreed to take $80,000 in county grants initially intended for the creation of a skate park at Walsh Pool and transfer those promised funds to the construction of a barrier-free playground at Berdan Grove. The skate park, while not abandoned entirely, is firmly on hold until Fair Lawn All-Sports returns to the council with its plans for expanding the organization's footprint at the former Walsh Pool site. All-Sports' preliminary plans, which have not yet received council support, call for building a baseball and soccer field around the skate park. While several council members said they intend to honor their earlier commitment to relocate the skate park, some residents …

Does the Republican Party need more leaders like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie? It does, according to an column posted on The DailyBeast.com Wednesday. Columnist John Avlon wrote in the article that Christie is the example other Republicans should be looking to amidst the GOP's "existential crisis." "The 2012 ass-kicking is forcing Republicans to confront their deepest demons—namely, that they cannot simply write off whole regions of the country and remain a viable national party," Avlon wrote. "They cannot afford to alienate the fastest-growing communities of color in the USA. They cannot win a war against modernity." Avlon noted that Christie has maintained largely favorable ratings from voters in a state that went to President Barack…

The Board of Education took the next step on the project Thursday night in approving the project, which has a history of opposition.
After moving forward to include the installation of a synthetic field at the high school last week, the Fair Lawn Board of Education took the next step in approving an architect for the project Thursday night. The synthetic turf for the football field, which will cost around $600,000, is being paid for by funds set aside by the district for capital improvements. Supporters say that it will save the district money in the long-term, increase student access to the field, and reduce sports injuries. “Over the years research has shown that injuries such as ACL tears, knees, ankles, and concussions have all been tremendously reduced on that surface,” Superintendent Bruce Watson said. But the project was twice put up for referendum and voted down…

The Ridgewood mayor – who lost to Congressman Scott Garrett in his 2006 congressional run – said Garrett needs to reverse his position and support President Obama's request for a $60 billion federal aid package.
Rep. Scott Garrett (R-5th) is failing the citizens of New Jersey by putting ideology over the needs of people still suffering through the devastation of Super Storm Sandy, Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn wrote in a scatching op-ed in The Record. The Ridgewood mayor, who lost to Garrett in a race for the 5th district Congressional seat in 2006, hammered the conservative from Wantage for not supporting the $60 billion federal Sandy aid package request. Garrett is the only federal lawmaker in the Garden State to not support the bundle of infrastructure upgrade requests made to Congress, expressing skepticism that accountability would be present or that the money would be spent effectively. Garrett is nothing if not consistent. The conservative …

It's not even Halloween yet and some stores are already putting up Christmas decorations. Is it too soon to deck the halls or are you ready for the 2012 Holiday Season to begin?
It's an annual question for merchants and shoppers: How soon is too soon to deck the malls and shopping centers for the Christmas holiday season? Some stores have already begun the process. Christmas music, decorations and layaway ads can already been seen in the shopping aisle at local stores. Halloween decorations still dominate, but signs of Christmas are already creeping in. So what do you think? When is too early for the Christmas shopping season to begin? Do the decorations and Christmas ads entice you to buy early or make you grit your teeth and wish for more time before the holiday rush begins?

The following is a letter to the editor from Adam Gussen: Over his years in Congress, Scott Garrett has voted to support the State of Israel on several occasions. He's voted to recognize the Israel on her anniversary. He's recognized her right to defend herself. He's voted to urge Mahmoud Abbas to remove the 10 articles in the Fatah Constitution that call for Israel's destruction and terrorism against Israel. In short, Scott Garrett has stood with Israel on many occasions. However, when Israel's security was actually being threatened, Scott Garrett put partisan politics ahead of the safety of every Israeli man woman and child. In October of last year, Scott Garrett voted against an amendment designed to stop US land from being …

Cristina Cutrone, Fair Lawn's Democratic Municipal Chairwoman, attended last week's Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
I am honored that I was elected to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., representing the Democrats of District 18. It was exhilarating to cast my vote for President Barack Obama on behalf of my fellow Bergen County Democrats, and it was also an honor to participate in our country’s democratic process at this level. As a high school social studies teacher, I have gained invaluable insight that I will bring back to my students from this opportunity to have an inside look at our democracy at work on the national level. I spent much of the week attending workshops and caucuses where I learned in-depth information about sharing the priorities of the Democratic platform and even more about the achievements of …
